- Business Problems Solved
Tableau Online has become an essential tool for organizations across various departments, providing valuable data analysis and visualization capabilities. Users from the Digital Marketing department rely on Tableau Online to accurately track lead and sale counts, as well as credit pass reports. By analyzing campaign performance and identifying areas for improvement, users are able to focus their time effectively and make data-driven decisions. The software also integrates seamlessly with web analysis tools, allowing for incident and defect analysis within the organization.
Tableau Online's strength lies in its ability to provide excellent KPI graphics and executive summaries, making it a valuable tool for data visualization and analysis. Users can easily customize reports to meet their specific needs, and the software also offers live data visualizations, ensuring that users always have access to up-to-date information. Vivint, for example, utilizes Tableau as a platform to centralize lead, sale, and install data, creating custom dashboards that display conversion rates and call center metrics.
Another key use case for Tableau Online is generating daily, monthly, and annual reports in the analytics department. The software provides powerful data insights that help drive business decisions. It is particularly useful for data integration with other software systems, serving as a bridge between data teams and business/product teams by presenting data in ways that stakeholders can understand and use effectively.
Sales representatives also benefit from Tableau Online as they can track their performance and commission through the software. It acts as the front-end to the in-house sales commission system. Additionally, Tableau Online promotes collaboration within organizations by facilitating data sharing and visualization.
The analytics and reporting team extensively uses Tableau Online for automated sharing of reports across various verticals. Similarly, partners of Tableau Software leverage this tool to advise customers on usage, implementation, and support.
Tableau Online has revolutionized product launches by providing dynamic online visualizations that were not possible with traditional presentation tools like PowerPoint. It enables different departments to present complex reporting in a visually pleasing and easy-to-understand manner.
In addition to marketing and sales, Tableau Online finds applications in HR, procurement, trade, security, and other business areas. It helps track the impact of projects, investigate whether design goals are being met, and provides valuable business intelligence through visualizations and exploration of key metrics.
Overall, Tableau Online is a versatile tool that addresses a wide range of business problems and enables organizations to make informed decisions based on data insights.

Data Visualization for companies of all sizes
- Visualize complex information in an easy way
- Allowing publishers/users to present data amongst multiple different dimensions
- Having integrations with underlying datasets that allows for scheduled refreshes of the data
- Reduce barrier of entry for new users i.e. make it more intuitive for new users to join Tableau as a publisher
- Mobile version is not as easy to navigate at the online/desktop version
- Ad-hoc reporting
Tableau Online- Future of data visualization
- Tableau Online is completely cloud based and that's why the reports and dashboards are accessible even on the go. One doesn't always need to access the office laptop to access the reports.
- The visualizations are interactive and one can quickly change the level at which they want to view the information. For example, one person might be more interested in looking at the country level performances rather than client level. This is intuitive and one doesn't need to create multiple reports for the same.
- The feature to ask questions in plain vanilla English language is great and helpful. For quick adhoc fact checks one can simply type what they are looking for and the Natural Language Programming algorithms under the hood parse the query, interpret it and then fetch the results accordingly in a visual form.
- Mobile experience is not at par with the desktop experience. The functionality set is limited and the UX is not that great. So this needs to be improved in leaps and bounds.
- It's unintuitive to create dashboards for a new user. There is a long learning curve in order to figure out how to get different things done with Tableau. So the learning curve is long as of now.
- Tableau Online still doesn't get the entire gamut of Tableau Desktop features. With the world moving towards cloud, the entire feature set has to be present in Tableau online as well.
Also, in organizations where data is sensitive and one department's data should not be accessible to others, Tableau Online works wonders as now the report owner/administrator can manage the access to each individual report or workbooks within a report as well.
The Last BI Tool You'll Ever Need
- user interface with reporting outputs are easy to understand and navigate
- online dashboards are incredibly helpful to provide 'snapshot' data
- reporting automation for building custom reports in PPTX
- Data analytics and statistical modeling are fantastic
- Can be a steep learning curve for new users
- Modeling and building algorithms aren't always intuitive and take some testing/retesting to ensure it's working as it should
- Inability to integrate easily with our HRIS platform. Reports are pulled from HRIS at various intervals and uploaded into Tableau
Great if the investment and know-how is there!
- It has been very easy for us to connect various data sources to Tableau Online, such as data from Treasure Data, Google Sheets, Redshift, and custom CSVs.
- Tableau Online's interface is easy to use as a bridge between data teams and other stakeholders who primarily consume data insights and reporting. It is easy to publish dashboards that users can log on to and see and interact with.
- Tableau, generally speaking, has calculations and other types of data manipulations available which can scale with your own business questions' complexity. It has been great to learn more about Tableau's functionality and find out that we can answer more complex questions we weren't able to answer before by using things they have available such as level of detail functions, order of operation filtering, and data prep.
- I believe being a skilled creator and an adept user in Tableau Online is not straightforward. It takes time and there is a learning curve. I have personally been to three Tableau conferences and felt like I needed a year of owning our company's Tableau creator license to feel comfortable and deliver powerful insight for our company.
- The UI available to edit dashboards could improve to be more friendly and modern. It sometimes feels like you are operating in a very rigid environment when editing dashboards in Tableau Online.
- The options to organize a company's dashboards and assign permissions are also not straightforward and the solutions I am aware of leave me wishing there was more.
A positive review of Tableau Online
- Data Visualization.
- Drill down into the data.
- Data exporting.
- You need to be decently technical to make reports.
- The average user can view reports but not create them.
- It would be nice if the user could look at different views without needing to publish so many different reports.
Get what you pay for
- Handles time-series data extremely well, so that correlations can be drawn from different events
- Well-suited for visualising queries from data warehouses such as AWS RedShift
- Attractive, slick visualisations
- Would be nice to see better support for cleaning and consolidating heterogeneous data sources
- It is possible to restrict access to a data table on a per-record (row) basis, but not possible to restrict access to data on a per-column basis
- Steep learning curve for people who aren't from a data science background
Review of Tableau Online
- Tableau Online handle the security areas very well for Operational security, User security, Data security, Network security and Application security.
- Tableau Online infrastructure performs regular maintenance to ensure system stability, security, and performance. The data centers are equipped with fire suppression and other monitoring systems designed to detect environmental issues and respond to them before they cause an outage.
- Tableau Online backup media is encrypted and always maintained in a secured facility. Disk-based backups are stored in secured data center facilities. Backups made to external backup providers are encrypted in transit and in storage. Only approved system administrators have access to backups.
- Data blending has some limitations regarding non-additive aggregates such as COUNTD, MEDIAN, and RAWSQLAGG. Non-additive aggregates are aggregate functions that produce results that cannot be aggregated along a dimension. Instead, the values have to be calculated individually.
- Tableau only shows the values that are represented in your data. If your data does not contain the complete range of values, the missing values will not be shown. For example, Sales Data for January to July and November through December. If there was no data recorded for August to November and if a line chart is created in Tableau, the missing months will not be shown. An option is to show the missing months to make it clear that there was no data recorded during that time.
- Null values can sometimes appear in place of the data you want in the view when you use data blending.
Tableau Online eliminates the need for a server environment, which includes hardware, deployment, and maintenance. Tableau Online can communicate directly with other cloud-based analytics services, such as Google BigQuery and Amazon Redshift. It also has compatibility with Salesforce and Google Analytics. From a cost analysis point Tableau Server environment is less than the Tableau Online considering the starting cost, configuration cost so for small and medium scale industry can go for a Server environment.
- Easy to use and set up
- Scales well within a growing organization
- Works well with mobile or cloud based platforms
- Easy to customize access for a variety of users
- Customizing a particular look can be challenging
- Has a bit of a learning curve
