Overall Satisfaction with Amazon Web Services

We have a SaaS application we host out of Singapore on behalf of one client, support multiple other companies with hosted web services and use some of the AWS services for internal processes.

  • Provides clear links to access support
  • Responding to support requests
  • Resolving support requests
  • Escalating support requests
  • Allowing access to a complaints process
  • Reviewing support processes to detect issues
  • Providing managerial or even supervisory oversight of their support teams
  • We could have the same services with other quality providers for 60% less cost.
  • We could get systems up and running with 1 day or less of system training elsewhere, compared to weeks with AWS.
  • Our security is compromised as basic processes like replacing Private Keys for access are impossible in AWS consoles for EC2 and similar services. We either initiate new server groups or hack out the old keys on the servers by hand.
  • The RDS service cannot be backed up and restored without changing AWS technology, requiring a huge reconfiguration of SaaS servers.
  • Basic DOS protection requires more services, more training, and more complexity. For other services it's built-in.
If I could give them a negative score I would. 103 days and no resolution, escalation, call backs, complaints process, or the ability to talk to anyone but the incompetent front line agents who dodge simple questions like - how do I raise a formal complaint, what's your SLA, what's the expected time frame, or can I talk to a supervisor/manager, etc.

No

Did Amazon Web Services live up to sales and marketing promises?

No

Did implementation of Amazon Web Services go as expected?

No

Would you buy Amazon Web Services again?

No

Overly complex, not straightforward, unable to do some very basic actions, have to go to so many different screens to do a simple job like run up a server and connect it to the VLAN. Very little visibility. Set up monitoring and pray it's actually working, as laying eyes on actual live stats, processes, etc is almost impossible. A simple job like seeing server logs live is difficult. Figuring out where DDOS is coming from if you are behind a load balancer is a nightmare. You can't log into the LB and grip the network traffic or see logs live in the console.
Amazon is okay if you are prepared to be trained in their very opaque systems and spend a lot of time becoming an AWS expert. AWS is not for your average Joe, or those who do not want to spend a lot of time becoming AWS certified. [In my experience] other systems are far more user-friendly and intuitive. I would not recommend AWS services. We have had issues with being overbilled when their products went wrong and are unable to get issues escalated. There have also been issues with getting access to talk to supervisors/managers, or being advised of how to access a formal complaints process that doesn't send us back to the same team we are already complaining about for lack of results, responses, or professionalism. We have been trapped by the same support(sic) team, who handles escalations, complaints, etc. In short, they aren't resolving or working to resolve the issues and we cannot get past them to get this looked at. We also cannot inform someone of the issues we are having with this team as they block all options to talk to supervisors, managers, etc. [I feel] AWS has given their unsupervised teams the ability to not do their jobs and block complaints. We are trapped by our systems being on AWS and them being difficult to extract. Also, we are grossly overcharged for services we don't use. We will never use AWS again.
