Overall Satisfaction with IBM FlashSystem

Our company purchased the Storwize v7000 in order to present storage to a development VMware environment. The workloads included very high performing (CPU / RAM / IOPS) virtual machines. The storage itself performed well, but we noticed that the efficiency was not as good as we were told it would be. Other than that fact, we were overall quite happy with the product. We still use it today but it has since been repurposed and replaced with a higher performing storage system from a different vendor. The Storwize v7000 now serves as a repository for backup and archive data while also serving as storage for a handful of shares for our development team. No issues have been reported from the team as far a performance and availability goes. Th storage admin team did mention on multiple occasions that making changes to any of the storage was a bit tricky and not intuitive.
  • Performs very well.
  • Easy to maintain.
  • Easy to install.
  • Making changes to the storage is not intuitive.
  • Setting various efficiency settings is not intuitive.
  • Documentation regarding storage settings was not clear enough.
  • Not as efficient as we would have liked so had to purchase additional storage.
  • We were able to repurpose the system and found a better fit for it.
  • Maintenance costs were more than expected after the first year.
We ended up shifting from the IBM Storwize v7000 platform to the NetApp AFF platform and have been extremely pleased by the performance, cost, and efficiency thus far. The systems certainly have similarities but the NetApp AFF has met all of our expectations thus far and making changes to the storage being presented (i.e. growing a volume) is much more straightforward on our AFF system.
I would recommend the Storwize v7000 for customers / colleagues that are looking for a system that serves as a repository of some kind or even as a system that will serve data to low impact / low to mid utilization environments. It meshed very well to our VMware environment and was very simple to install and setup.
