Overall Satisfaction with Teradata Vantage

Teradata Vantage is the main DW platform at SICREDI. Different front-end tools connect to Teradata Vantage to summary reports, which can be drilled-down. Besides that, Teradata Vantage supports many ad-hoc queries from users across the company.
Some regulation reports, which sweep different sources and generate XML outputs come from Teradata Vantage.
History data from source systems are kept in Teradata Vantage for a longer period of time. After that, Teradata Vantage NOS (Native Object Store) sends old data to S3 Parquet files to be stored as archived data.
  • ETL (Extract - Transfor - Load)
  • NOS to send data from Teradata Vantage to S3 and from S3 to Teradata Vantage
  • Teradata GeoSpacial feature
  • Bulk reading and writing in huge tables
  • MPP capacity already mature
  • Temporal Capacity more mature that other solutions
  • TASM
  • Unity (CDC needs a lot of improvement)
  • Ecosystem
  • Procedure programming language (very poor)
  • Functions programming language (very poor)
  • Space management needs improvement
  • BAR should be part of main solution and not an "extra" feature (as Oracle)
  • Native data masking feature (Oracle has "data redaction")
  • Teradata Vantage should have "Synonym" feature
  • Increased business opportunities with CRM using Teradata Vantage as source platform
  • Enhanced business mapping opportunities through credit data anlysis
  • Bad credit recovery using automated reports
Oracle Exadata is an excellent product. Performs mass data processing with similar capability compared to Teradata. Some features Exadata has lack for Teradata Vantage, such as archive generation, consistent reading and writing (simultaneously), RMAN backing up online (Teradata Vantage's online backup is not as good); overall RMAN is better than Teradata Vantage's BAR (Backup And Restore).

On the other hand, Teradata Vantage's native MPP capability with native sharding architecture allows mass data processing with software only. Exadata needs hardware to allow that. That permits Teradata Vantage to work more natively in cloud computing.

Also, Teradata Vantage has a mature Temporal feature, which allows data time-tracking better than Exadata.

Plus, Teradata Vantage has an awesome feature called NOS, which is extremely performatic to write tables to S3 in Parquet format. It also allows to read from some Object Store formats from S3 into Teradata Vantage native table.

Do you think Teradata Vantage delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Teradata Vantage's feature set?

Yes

Did Teradata Vantage live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of Teradata Vantage go as expected?

No

Would you buy Teradata Vantage again?

Yes

Teradata Vantage is an excellent Analytics solution overall. Very well suited for data warehousing, ETL, mass data handling, front-end reporting, etc. Its MPP capability is mature due to several decades of experience. MPP capability fits very well for cloud computing paradigm. GeoSpacial feature is fine too. It does not seem very well suited for non-structured data (NoSQL). Also not well suited to be a transactional /operational DataBase, such as Oracle or DB2.
