Overall Satisfaction with TIBCO BusinessWorks

TIBCO BusinessWorks is used as a part of an ESB set up in our organization. We usually use it for pub-sub model integrations internally with other teams as our customers. It is used and managed by a centralized team called MSG which I am a part of. It addresses various business problems which need complex integration.
  • TIBCO BusinessWorks has a really good IDE called designer for developing the code which is user-friendly.
  • The coding part is fun and basically takes less time to build when compared to traditional coding.
  • The packaged code only needs us to configure it rather than write a lot of custom code as it is pretty much complete.
  • As an administrator, tester and developer, I can vouch for BW as it is pretty easy to install, maintain and set up. Also doing POC's and its unit testing is pretty easy for any use case
  • TIBCO BusinessWorks 5.x can have the REST palettes included for free like BW 6.x so that we can promote it better for usage in the company.
  • Sometimes when we raise a request in support and it is marked as an enhancement in the next version, that is not followed up properly.
  • Support personnel are not up to teh mark sometimes and are difficult to communicate with in terms of language.
  • Expired SSL certificates have to be imported and replaced manually for a runtime BW interface instead of the program pulling the new certs automatically
  • Costwise we had a negative impact as it is expensive to buy more TIBCO tools. So we look at alternatives for TIBCO products when we plan to implement new solutions other than ESB like for API gateways or for CEP. It also affects our current scalability,
  • On a positive note, we are able to achieve our goals easily on time. Thus save the company a lot of money.
Yes, it is definitely faster when compared to other integration technologies. The efficiency is high because of visual creation as it easily lets the developer understand what components of code are included in the shell structure before the configuration is done when comparing it a with similar search in codes of lines of other programming languages.
It is very user-friendly and the mappings are a visual delight when troubleshooting an issue related to a code as we can easily make out what has been mapped pictorially.
When compared to other programming languages, sometimes it is hard to achieve visibility in testing as TIBCO BusinessWorks is seen as a black box by other teams. Also, it is hard to define the scope for TIBCO BusinessWorks testing for non-BW functional testers. So we have to involve pretty closely in testing.
  • MuleSoft
We have compared MuleSoft and TIBCO BusinessWorks and BW is much more mature than the MuleSoft product. It is proven and reliable so we have it with us. The only downside for TIBCO BusinessWorks is the cost.

I believe TIBCO BusinessWorks is suited well for most cases except for integrating with particular systems like Siebel, PeopleSoft, etc., where adapters are required as they need to be more robust.

Mainly the use case for using TIBCO BusinessWorks is dependent on how it is being used. Sometimes alternative tools for TIBCO BusinessWorks are better if the use case does not fall under an ESB category.
