It is primarily used to build dashboards that allow functional managers to monitor KPIs and drill down as needed. It is used across the whole organization.
Spotfire is the first BI tool our company has used for self-service BI. It allows faster decision making and insights provided by the dashboards are very valuable.

- Ability to quickly build visualization using drag and drop, and the ability to connect with multiple data sources.
- Ability to document and review the model workflow using Data Canvas.
- Comprehensive statistical functions library and support for R integration.
- Axis expression syntax is difficult to master. The documentation is not very helpful and it requires a lot of trial and error. The Power BI DAX is much more straight forward and well documented.
- I do not see an easy way to customize the query used for a report. All visualizations drop the data source when making a single change to the query that did not even change the number of columns. Besides, changing the query itself is so difficult. I can go to the data table properties > Source Information tab and see the SQl but I cannot modify it there.
- There is a bit of learning curve for users who recently upgraded to Spotfire version 10.
- Export visualization to PowerPoint reduces the resolution a lot and they do not look professional.
