Overall Satisfaction with Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance

The Unitrends Appliance is used to back up and archive our files' shares and VMs for all departments. We needed a way to keep multiple versions of the VMs on site to roll back in case of problems and files' shares as well in case of user error (unwanted deletion mostly) but also to protect us from viruses or other threats to our files' integrity. We also needed protection from disasters so the archiving unit provides just that.
  • While the previous version of the interface was filled to the brim with functionalities, it was slow and rather clunky. The new interface has been streamlined and uncluttered so only the most used functionalities are apparent. They also redrew the dashboards so you can easily see what's protected and what's not, what jobs are finished, running and planned. Overall, the interface looks good and shows you everything you need to know in seconds.
  • Recovery is easy. You can recover a file from a VM or from a share in seconds. You can also recover a complete VM in a matter of minutes. The process is easy, select from which backup you want to recover, what you want and how you want it and go !
  • Storage management is very well thought out. With "Incremental Forever", you don't have to worry about doing full backups and incrementals in between, the full backups are automatically synthetized from the incrementals as needed, simplifying the backup process a lot and saving hard drive space.
  • While the new interface is great and to the point, advanced functionalities have been buried so deep they are sometimes hard to find. You do have to option of using the old interface to accomplish those things, but I believe all the options should be available in the new interface as well.
  • Storage management, while very efficient, is a little hard to wrap your head around. Although it could be my lack of knowledge, I cannot find an easy way to query which backup takes what space in the internal storage.
  • For file level backups, as we have multiple layers of backup protection, Unitrends being the last layer, we have never had to restore from it yet. For VM backups though, we have restored multiple VMs over the years to recover crashed servers and corrupted databases and it definitely saved us weeks worth of works and/or downtime.
Any company that uses VMs, file shares, and databases could use a Unitrends appliance. They work well, deploy in minutes and support a good range of devices and data types. They are somewhat expensive so smaller companies might want to examine other options.
