Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication

Veeam Backup & Replication is being utilized to backup and protect our core virtual machines through VMWare. It is our primary backup utility, handling both backups to disk, replication to cloud providers, and backup to tape - all within a single console. Before this tool, we were limited in our backup options, and often needed to utilize more than one program or VMWare tool to back up our infrastructure - and even then we did not have a quick and easy way to test our backups.
  • Easy to Use - Single console that is intuitive and offers plenty of help text and tool-tips so you feel confident in making changes to critical infrastructure
  • Reliable - Veeam has certainly saved our skin in quickly restoring things - both at the file level and virtual machine level
  • Excellent community - community members and support personnel are eager to assist and troubleshoot when things don't go as planned
  • Visuals - when it comes to figuring out a backup methodology or retention settings, it sometimes takes some snooping around the forums and Veeam's Help Center to obtain graphical representations. I would love to see these and any visual representations available when setting job options - would've been helpful back when we first obtained the product.
  • The yearly price we pay in support and maintenance for Veeam hasn't come close to the amount of times we've used Veeam to restore critical aspects of our infrastructure during emergencies or user-error.
  • The ability to test backups immediately after they are created, receiving a report from the software on the success/failure of the virtual machines being restored and powered up has provided our team peace of mind and given the company confidence in it's backups.
On top of backing up to local, segregated storage on our premises, and backing up regularly to tape, we also backup nightly to an off-site cloud provider. Veeam makes it simple - all we had to do was enter in the connection information provided by our cloud provider, tell Veeam what backups to copy, and then when to perform the copy. We are looking to move towards replicating our infrastructure off-site (versus just backup copies) and we look forward to utilizing Veeam for this.
We have configured Veeam to perform a SureBackup job after every backup, which will automatically fire up the backed up VMs (directly from the storage they are located at) and perform several tests to ensure they are recoverable and will boot up. In addition to this, we also have the ability to leave those backups running, so we can log in via a console and test performing updates and other maintenance tasks, all without creating a copy of the VM on our production environment, nor having to worry about touching the production VM.

The moment we complete our testing, we tell Veeam to shut down the environment, and it reverts the backup to the state it was prior to the SureBackup job.

This alone has made things tremendously easier - as we can now test maintenance and updates for applications, and once we feel confident in the installation process, we can perform the tasks against the production VM. I can't tell you how many times we've encountered application patches and upgrades that would've taken us down for at least a day waiting on the vendor - whereas now we can test and seek help from the vendor of the application without our users going without the program.
Veeam is my go-to recommendation for anyone that is looking for a virtual machine backup solution, whether using Hyper-V or VMWare. Its ease of use, reliability, and pricing make it an excellent choice for any scenario requiring peace of mind of your virtual infrastructure backups. The software scales well, easily accommodating a single shop all the way to expanding to a multi-site, multi-tenant organization. I have recommended Veeam to anyone I have ever spoken to regarding backups and will continue to recommend them in the future.
