Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication

Veeam Backup and Replication is being tested and used as a partial and possibly a full replacement for Commvault and Zerto. The replication component would replace Zerto by allowing us to perform replication between our primary site and our remote secondary site. backup components would be used to lower the cost of backing up our current infrastructure.
  • Backup servers
  • Replication of virtual servers
  • Bare-metal recovery
  • Implementation of CDP for VM replication
  • Data continuity
  • Synchronization within recovery groups
  • Increased RPO in disaster recovers situations
  • Decreased cost of backups
  • Allowed more servers to be backed up
  • Speed of backup and recovery
20 workloads are currently backed up and/or protected by Veeam including application servers, web servers, database servers, and file servers. Windows Active directory is also protected. Servers are grouped by source application and include servers that are dependencies of the application allowing for recovery groups to test and recover entire suites.
Veeam has allowed us to back up virtual server infrastructure as bare-metal backups to an offsite recovery point. We also use Veeam to back up data from database servers and file servers as we as backing up web applications to lower-cost backup storage (sans and nas) as well as long term storage to tapes.
Veeam has allowed us to recover both, bare-metal restores of virtual machine environments and point in time recovery of applications and their associated databases and files to verify backup and recovery functionality as well as to test disaster recovery scenarios.
  • Zerto and Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery
Veeam is comparable to Commvault when used as a backup and recovery solution allowing server grouping, long term retention, and tiered backup solutions. when compared to Zerto, Veeam is not as capable due to the missing continuous data replication which causes recovery points to be inconsistent and RPO's for disaster recovery to be larger.
VMware ESXi, Zerto, Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery
Veeam would function well for general backup functionality and bare-metal restores of virtual environments. Veeam is less than appropriate in environments that require a high degree of data synchronization between servers due to the lack of continuous data protection in current versions causing timestamps that are too far apart for applications, file servers, and database servers.
