Vertex Indirect Tax O Series

Overall Satisfaction with Vertex

Currently, we are using it for our Sales (AR) to charge taxes on our product. We are in the process of implementing Vertex with the P2P side for purchases. The difficulty we have found currently is with the P2P integration into our ERP system since Workday is not fully integrated currently. So, we have a workaround. My fear is origin-based states and rate changes since a table will need to be updated until Vertex is fully implemented.
  • Returns through VITR.
  • Exemption Certs.
  • Rates - always up to date.
  • Custom Reports.
  • Exports of Data.
  • Rate Detail of Recommendations.
  • Time management.
  • Tax savings on purchases.
  • Break down of rates, county, and MTA are difficult when extracting reports.
  • Product Features
  • Product Usability
  • Product Reputation
  • Vendor Reputation
Price was a big factor and since it was a little high, but Vertex is the best for both US and VAT indirect taxes so we put price aside. We looked at the other factors of being around for a long time, the ability to get accurate rates, mapping of purchases, and the taxability. All of these outweighed the other competitors and we decided to purchase Vertex for the license and integrations.
I used Q and now we're on O series and it's just getting used to the online systems. To be honest, I think in Q the reports extracted were more robust then O series. O won't let me pull all states into one report with the correct break down in columns.
  • Returns - the VITR tool helps but at first we didn't know it was a separate tool than the actual Vertex tool.
  • Bill Tax on invoices - prior to Vertex we had to pay the taxes.
  • Integrates with uncommon systems - Workday.
The integration with Workday is rare so that is a current limit to see if there will be any hiccups. The custom reports look to be easy, but then, when trying to use them, it was a little complex and I had error messages where I had to reach out to our support contact. I wish my contact was able to help with the configuring for the reports needed to make filing returns manually easier.
During the integration of Vertex, the onboarding stage was great but then we did have some issues where we reported a ticket after going live and we had to follow up a couple of times prior to getting a response. So currently, we haven't gotten exceptional support for the Sales implementation.
In Sales, it works great for origin-based states and states with local rates since our internal system could not handle it. Not having a tax engine and then implementing has definitely been a challenge but the outcome has been great on how Vertex is taxing our products and we don't have to manually add tax.

The ECM helps with the validation of certs and correct forms which helps lower the review time. We do not currently have ECM but after this conference, I'm going to try to implement in our company.
