Adobe Captivate

Captivate is a great tool for creating content from scratch intended for use in responsive design. This is one of my go-to tools when this particular scenario exists. Captivate's responsive design option and the wide range of tools make the application an amazing option for mobile design. Despite having a PowerPoint import and conversion option, Captivate is NOT the tool to use when starting with content created in PowerPoint. Slides are imported as a single image, removing animations and any ability to edit the content.

Synergy Education Platform

It is well suited for all K-12 education systems that are looking for effective ways to improve and streamline their information. It would not be as useful for a college or a university system as it does not have the complexity needed in order to carry out all of the specific functions that a university system would need.

Pros

  • Easy learning curve. Captivate makes it easy for a new user to pick it up and understand where to begin. Adobe, in general, does this very well and Captivate is no exception. When you begin using Captivate, many of the tasks to create a video come naturally as things are laid out in a way that makes sense.
  • Embedding with LMS (Learning Management Systems). Adobe has made it very easy to deploy your produced video to any of the popular LMS's available. Captivate also gives you a very easy way of including a SCORM score for any quizzes that must be passed at the end of the video in order to proceed to the next video.
  • Capturing Audio has never been easier. With Captivate you can easily add voice-over audio that you can record directly inside of Captivate, or import a pre-recorded audio clip. You can import sounds from other sources for effects in the video and Captivate already includes all of the commonly used sounds for mouse-clicks, error sounds, etc.

Cons

  • Captivate can stagnate and is less user-friendly when it comes to adding animations and certain transitions on your presentation.
  • I found that Captivate wasn't always so user-friendly when it came to using the Demo presentation feature. There were times when I'd have to re-record my steps because for some reason it wasn't accepting certain clicks and/or it would capture things I didn't want it to capture.
  • I found myself getting frustrated a lot when using Captivate because some of the things that I was used to clicking/creating on a different software tool (that was more user-friendly) and the results I was looking for caused me to take extra steps when using Captivate.

We are all in with Adobe products as creative tools, but are leaning more and more on Articulate for course development. It is likely that Captivate will continue to be a tool in our belt even if it isn't our immediate go to

Usability

Adobe Captivate8.0
Based on 2 answers
Adobe Captivate does take some getting used to. There are features that are much more convoluted than they need to be, but overall it is a great product with a some excellent features. Being in a pretty small market, Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline dominate the space. They are not the same software, but allow for eLearning authoring. Each has their benefit and their downside, but, for me, Adobe Captivate edges out Storyline.

Support

The support team is good in responding and maintaining communication. Sometimes...well...almost always, you will find yourself having to use a 2nd attempt with more details and easier terminology to get the tech to understand the question or situation. These techs should know English 100% and their product 100% to be on a support team for the USA. I do not get the impression this is true.

Alternatives Considered

Articulate 360 offers a both Storyline and Rise as eLearning authoring tools, as well as a Stock Library with over 100,000 images for $1200/year. Adobe Captivate is a stand alone product for $30/month. If you are only using eLearning authoring tools the cost is significantly less. If you are looking at the broader suite of software, Articulate 360 does offer two eLearning authoring tools and a Stock Library, in addition to 3 other program, for a total of 5. For the same cost, I purchased Adobe Captivate along with the entire Adobe Creative Cloud suite (27 programs), including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, etc.. This suite offers a much broader range of design, allowing for content to be created and engaged in many more ways

Synergy Education Platform seemed to be just as affordable as the software options that offer similar solutions but individually. Synergy Education Platform helps bring all of that data that is needed together in the same space for one lower and flat rate which has been incredibly useful for our organization. I would continue to use this product over the products of competitors

Return on Investment

  • One negative aspect of ROI is Adobe Captivate has a steep learning curve.
  • Another negative impact on ROI is Adobe Captivate isn't the least expensive tool on the market.
  • On the positive side, Adobe Captivate has freed up our trainers from tedious classroom tasks.
  • Another positive is that our implementation of Adobe Captivate has resulted in dozens of time-saving training modules, building a library of content used throughout the firm.
