Appian

Surely Appian is not a Site Development Tool. So we should avoid the use of a system for just UX development. We should look for process automation as much as we can mature the use cases.

Oracle BPM Suite

Oracle BPM is well suited to organizations and environments that have a good understanding of their business processes and organizational structures. Trying to introduce a tool such as Oracle BPM into the organization without a good grasp on how the business operates is a recipe for disaster as the implementation will uncover all of the dirty secrets of an organizations business processes and bring them to light. BPM is not to be utilized for smaller service orchestrations or technical service implementations, these should be handled by the Oracle SOA Suite using the BPEL process manager, leaving BPM to handle the organizational business processes, referring to and including lower level services and BPEL processes as needed.

Pros

  • Repeatable process. Once implemented in Appian, you have an automated process that will always work in the same way. No more dependencies on people remembering what needs to be done or how to do it.
  • Great integration with other applications. Appian allows you to integrate with many other applications to provide a seamless process flow.
  • Reporting capability. Appian has the ability to report on information from any connected system to provide real-time data. Very nice graphical and textual reports can be created.
  • Sites. The ability to create a place for a user to be able to perform their required job without having to see all of the other applications, reports and records. This allows a very focused approach for a user to interact with the system.

  • Capacity to integrate well into a whole lot of apps and databases
  • The studio is quite helpful to configure the business processes especially if it's a standard flow. The drag and drop, although quite buggy, is good.

Cons

  • Even if Appian is working a lot on it, it should improve the low-coding features.
  • Improvement of the form design not using sail.
  • Foster the connection for different customers, all of them using Appian. Having a process across companies and not only offices could be great.

  • It's a very complex piece of software and documentation is poor. Examples and explanations appear to be non-existent.

The amount of time and effort that we have spent on our applications with Appian almost guarantees that we will be renewing our licenses. The ROI of Appian has been very benfical

We are invested in the Oracle BPM Suite technology and are very comfortable with direction is has been moving and excited to see the roadmap enhancement items that are planned for the Oracle BPM 12c release in the future. We expect that additional support for BPMN 2.0 events and additional adapters and Process Accelerators will continue to enhance our use of the product.

Usability

Usability can refer to a number of different things. From a customer's perspective, using the product to set up their profile and complete the service requests is easy and straightforward. From a provider's perspective, we would like to have had a chance to try out the low code drag and drop capabilities to create our own business processes and forms, but relied instead on the Appian developers (who were awesome) to build our prototype. Maintaining users and cleaning up data in the prototype is very easy, which has made having a clean system to demonstrate to people has been very simple.

Appian updates happen automatically and regularly (about every two months or so). We are informed when updates are coming to understand the timing, and in our short timeframe (about 6 months) we have had no issues with functionality breaking

As analyst I participated in a developer boot camp. At times it was hard to keep up but most of the time it made sense. Trainer took the time to explain and slowed pace down to answer questions etc.

Alternatives Considered

Against programming languages like .NET and Java, Appian is faster to design and develop applications, but it lacks the flexibility in UI and advanced debugging tools. Against Pega, Appian is easier to use and less expensive.

The presentation of the diagrams that the tool can generate is ostentatious and very striking. If you are going to work with Oracle database, the tool allows you great integration capabilities. Bizagi is a very good alternative, although in simulation and in final results Oracle has the advantage.

Return on Investment

  • Our objective to reduce customer effort when dealing with government by 25% was exceeded. In the process of applying for an alcohol licence renewal alone, we saw approximately 80% reduction in time and effort for the business customer - and that was just a prototype! Imagine the possibilities when this is taken into a live environment!

  • One example of an Oracle BPM implementation that we supported for a Federal Government customer resulted in the automation of a manual paper-based process which took on average 4 days to complete; after implementing SOA and BPM to automate the process the completion time decreased to < 6 hours and avoided duplication or effort that was taking place at each step of the process.
