AWS Elastic Beanstalk

Elastic Beanstalk is a great fit for a product that's already open to using Amazon Web Services, but has a team that does not want to work with environment setup. Furthermore, it's really only a fit for situations where the configuration needed from the team fits within a stack that Elastic Beanstalk offers. Even if you're interested in using one of the stacks they do support, you have more ability to modify configurations if you're handling all the setup and configuration on your own.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI)

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) is proper if intended to be used as IAAS/PAAS for stand-alone applications. However, we faced issues when using it with Oracle EBS either due to certification (this was in the very beginning with the classic version and is no longer the case) or performance.

Pros

AWS Elastic Beanstalk

  • Extremely easy to get set up and get apps deployed.
  • Integrates really well with existing build processes and is manageable through a suite of CLI tools.
  • It is very easy to scale up.
  • The documentation is exceptionally detailed and covers a very wide range of deployment scenarios.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI)

  • Reduction in cost as no scalability is required from an IT infrastructure side.
  • Pre-configured, engineered and simple in nature. This helps in reducing complexity on the IT side.
  • Less number of workers needed. Helps in effectively reducing man power and using comp.

Cons

AWS Elastic Beanstalk

  • Difficult to understand. No matter how cute and easy the AWS videos sound, I find it difficult to understand. There are just too many configurations.
  • EBS is free, but you pay for the resources. Problem is, I end up using more resources, thus paying more.
  • They could work on their logging system a bit more. I would love more dashboard metrics in logging, and an easier way to look at logs.
  • An option to make the default URL more friendly. I am forced now to use Route 53 to get a more friendly DNS name, but would have loved if they would have provided a better name to begin with. There are long random strings which could go away.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI)

  • Visual network designer would assistant in ensuring configuration matches intended design.
  • Automatic and seemless migration of VMs from OCI Classic to OCI would show that Oracle is taking cloud infrastructure service seriously.
  • Better, faster support. Traditional methods of filing SRs date back to the 1980s. Online realitime chat with support that know what they're doing is critical.
  • One click template image load from Oracle Cloud Marketplace is basic omission. It's available for oci-c but not oci.

As our technology grows, it makes more sense to individually provision each server rather than have it done via beanstalk. There are several reasons to do so, which I cannot explain without further diving into the architecture itself, but I can tell you this. With automation, you also loose the flexibility to morph the system for your specific needs. So if you expect that in future you need more customization to your deployment process, then there is a good chance that you might try to do things individually rather than use an automation like beanstalk.

It is a great tool to manage your applications. You just need to write the codes, and after that with one click, your app will be online and accessible from the internet. That is a huge help for people who do not know about infrastructure or do not want to spend money on maintaining infrastructure.

The support for AWS Elastic Beanstalk was adequate. For most of our situations and our queries, the responsiveness and resolution was satisfactory. We did have one or two situations where it took us a couple of iterations to get to the bottom of things. Generally adequate support, but there is a little room for improvement

- Do as many experiments as you can before you commit on using beanstalk or other AWS features.- Keep future state in mind. Think through what comes next, and if that is technically possible to do so.- Always factor in cost in terms of scaling.- We learned a valuable lesson when we wanted to go multi-region, because then we realized many things needs to change in code. So if you plan on using this a lot, factor multiple regions.

Alternatives Considered

AWS Elastic Beanstalk

The other main competitor that I have used would probably be Heroku. While Heroku is incredibly simple and easy to get a sample web app online, its dashboard and product connectivity didn't feel quite as seamless as AWS Elastic Beanstalk. AWS Elastic Beanstalk has a higher up front cost to learn and deploy, but its ability to scale and grow and be transparent afterwards is really its selling point. Heroku felt expensive, and I never really knew what I was getting from it.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI)

We have selected Oracle Cloud Infrastructure mainly because of the native support for Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse, which is our preferred choice for data storage in the case of our newest products. Another important factor was the Ravello service allowing us to deploy our existing VMware data center workloads without any modification to the currently configured virtual machines and network.

Return on Investment

AWS Elastic Beanstalk

  • till now we had not Calculated ROI as the project is still evolving and we had to keep on changing the environment implementation
  • it meets our purpose of quick deployment as compared to on-premises deployment
  • till now we look good as we also controlled our expenses which increased suddenly in the middle of deployment activity

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI)

  • We have an internal chargeback for infrastructure and we anticipate the cost factor will be neutral.
  • We have been impressed with the provisioning aspect of OCI and expect it to save on data center staff.
  • The scalability of OCI has been a timesaver for our environments.
