SAP
The system is not always intuitive to a new user. However with some upfront training it is easy to catch on. A lot of the management is left in the hands of the users, in our company that would be finance. To us that is a great benefit, however, that may not work in all situations.

  • Data aggregation and charting. We consistently use Capital IQ's data collection abilities for comparing multiple indices and/or individual publicly traded securities.
  • Excel integration. Cap IQ's Excel plug-in is extremely useful for performing valuation analyses, and allows one to easily update key market metrics for ongoing use.
  • Transaction monitoring. Cap IQ maintains a reliable and continuously updated store of M&A transactions that one can reference for the purpose of analyzing deal activity in a particular industry subsector.

Cons
SAP
  • SRC had a delay in information until the month's operations officially closed and the data was fed into the system. Other products that I have used allow you to see activity throughout the month. Knowing that it isn’t final, you can still get a sense of how revenues/expenses are stacking up for the month, etc. In addition, other operational metrics, like Average Daily Census, Admissions, etc. should be able to be tracked daily, rather than having to wait until the month is over.

  • The scope and depth of the collected data can be increased.
  • The UI with little icons and buttons may be difficult at first but may become intuitive. The UI isn't horrible but might be better.
  • Global data coverage, but US and UK markets have the greatest details. MENA and APAC lack.

Usability
SAP
I could train users to use the Business Warehouse within an hour or two. Also very easy to create reports and send web links to view the report. Exporting to Excel/Word/etc. was very simple and had good formatting.

Performance
SAP
Very long reports in SRC would take a long time to run (several minutes). However, shorter reports could be run quickly.

In-Person Training
SAP
This is more a function of the training I received from the systems experts in my organization, not training from Business Objects/SAP. The training was rushed, without an agenda, and didn’t meet my needs as a user.

SAP
Business Objects SRC is more flexible than other products and that is especially important in a company where each division is completely different in how they operate, their KPIs, and their operating functions. It allows finance to decide what information is important at that time and does not take months of IT resources to meet management's immediate informational needs. Reporting and budgeting is easily updated when there is an addition or a deletion of a line of business. Finance is allowed to dice the information in any way to satisfy the current needs of the business.

We had Capital IQ in addition to Bloomberg. It was much easier for a new person to use Capital IQ than Bloomberg. The ease of use was a huge selling point for us. Yahoo finance on the other hand is free, but you cannot gather all the data you may need in one location like you can in Capital IQ.

Return on Investment
SAP
  • Thus far the BI team has been playing catch-up since our SAP implementation, as a good many important customer facing reports were left out of the implementation as a requirement for go-live.
  • The scalability and SAP data conversion are the real value.
