CorelDRAW Graphics Suite

CorelDRAW is very well suited for customizing cross plots and diagrams from external software, and integrating them with multiple other sources, such as pictures, in order to distill the main concepts and summarize ideas for scientific papers. It also works great for digitizing figures from old papers and adapting them to the context of your work.

Unity

Unity is a great game engine whether the user is a beginner or a professional, the tools provided by unity are more than enough to create a game which can be enjoyed by many if the idea behind the game is great. Unity also provides support of AR/VR development and different operating systems like IOS and Android apart from windows, this makes unity the engine which is preferred and used by most people in the industry as well.

Pros

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite

  • Ease of use is a major factor in our choice for the CorelDRAW Graphics Suite. With intuitive interface terminologies, users are able to jump right into the applications with ease and confidence.
  • The ability to customize the Suite to fit your particular needs is a major strength of the CorelDRAW Graphics Suite. CorelDRAW customization abilities are endless and can turn the default Graphics Suite into a fully customized powerhouse application catered to a designer's specific wants and needs.

Unity

  • 3D space design is especially easy in Unity, whether for 3D games or educational experiences.
  • VR development is one of Unity's greatest strengths. The ability to be working in a 3D environment on the desktop and then hit Play and be immersed in that environment in the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift is incredible.
  • Reusable code from the asset store is a huge plus. Being able to find libraries which solve the problems you are trying to solve can save an incredible amount of time.
  • Staying up to date with changes in VR and AR development is a big plus. Unity has such a strong community that libraries are always being updated.
  • Finding example code is not very hard, and there are "scenes" that other developers have created that you can import and view, to see how they achieved particular goals. This makes learning Unity by reverse-engineering others' publicly available code a great way to learn.
  • There are so many free video tutorials in Unity that it is much easier to learn than some of its competitors in the space.

Cons

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite

  • Some of the font files have spacing issues, for example, Monotype Corsiva is set a little to the right when choosing a centered text
  • We can't save a version of the CorelDRAW file as a jpeg.
  • The auto vertical text centering options don't always transfer well or show if saved as a pdf, so we hand-center text vertically.

Unity

  • Since game development is so complex in itself, Unity also has a lot of complexity in its interface. Despite the efforts of its creators, the many options in Unity's interface can be overwhelming to the beginner, particularly, taking into account that each object in the scene can have its specific piece of code attached. It takes time and practice to learn to navigate the interface.
  • Unity operates with C#, which is easier to grasp than C++. However, traditionally, C++ has been the standard in the game industry for many years and some experienced professionals coming to Unity can feel a bit annoyed with this change. On the opposite side, if you start in Unity and for some reason, you decide to change to another game engine (like Unreal, for example), you will have to be prepared to learn C++.
  • The Asset Store, at the same time it is an advantage, is accused by many critics of encouraging "asset flippers", which are games made completely by getting ready-made assets at the store, where the "creator" does not actually create anything. It is not a disadvantage of Unity in itself, but it is advisable to the beginner to be careful to not use too many third-party game assets.

Usability

Just like any design program or suite, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't do graphic design professionally. If you're not adept at learning a program or experience, it isn't a program you can just pick up and start using easily. Outside of the learning curve, it's a nice program with a decent user interface.

It's actually incredibly easy to use given the complex tasks you have. Once you learn the various windows it becomes second nature. Compared to something like Blender (which I would probably rate as a 2 on usability), the learning curve of Unity is a breeze! The only improvements I can think of would be to streamline some common workflows so you don't have to dig through menus to find them.

It's not easy to get people. The tutorials don't really "tell you" exactly how to do stuff. You have to depend on Youtube and even then, it's not the best. Corel really needs to put out really good quick tutorials on how to do "key" special effects, like how to remove a background QUICK, Art Conversions, Best Practices, etc.

I have not had to use Unity's support extensively. This is likely because there is so much documentation and so many classes available for free online. Due to this, there is little need for support. They were very responsive when I requested educational licensing. Setting it up and providing it all quickly.

Alternatives Considered

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite

Corel is as good as Adobe Illustrator but cheaper. It is easier to use than Inkscape, however, Inkscape is free. I chose Corel because I learned it 10+ years ago and transitions were easy enough, affordable enough that I didn't have to relearn or break the bank to continue with Corel.

Unity

The ease of use of Corona although superior to unity does not stack up to an overall better experience. Unity asset store needs some work period the Corona asset store is brilliant. In Android Studio getting the simple projects to build is very time consuming and worthwhile. In Visual Studio it is easy to debug an application in unity by attaching to process. I selected unity above Corona because of the possibilities for expanding to the desktop. I could not use Android Studio as quickly as I could use unity and Visual Studio. I could use Corona in under one hour and it would serve all of my needs at the moment. However, it does not have the expandability or extreme boost in sales numbers that could be achieved.

Return on Investment

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite

  • Ease of use reflects on less time to train new users, a positive impact in investment and productivity.
  • The practicality to make new designs results in less time needed to do them, again a positive impact.
  • The integration with other graphic programs could be better if needed to finish a rendering using the design made in Corel Draw it's needed to export in formats that don't carry all information and the process is not that simple.

Unity

  • Unity has a positive impact because, as of now, we don't have to pay for our license because we do not go beyond the revenue roof.
  • We cannot say more than that because the games that we are producing in Unity are not yet launched.
