Highlights |
Research Team Insight Published Dell PowerEdge R and HPE ProLiant DL lines of rack servers designed to handle various and complex workloads. They are directly competing solutions and are frequently compared with each other and the popular IBM Power series, including the IBM POWER9. HPE offers the ProLiant DL line of rack servers to support software-defined data centers, and describes their product line as flexible but generally dense and compact, with options to support a storage-intensive workload. The Dell PowerEdge R includes one-socket servers priced for small business, two-socket servers for scale-out or virtualization, or four-socket servers for data-intensive workloads and dense virtualization. Both lines of rack servers are deployed at companies of all sizes, reflecting their diverse product portfolio with options catering to enterprises, and midsize or smaller companies also. FeaturesUsers describe a number of reasons to deploy either the HPE ProLiant DL or the Dell PowerEdge R in a data center. Both product lines present overall strong options for core capabilities, and both are as versatile and scalable, as advertised. But users of the HPE ProLiant DL also enjoy the centralized remote management experience derived from HPE’s iLO (for “Integrated Lights-Out”) embedded management system available with these servers. Notably, users report satisfaction with HPE’s with the device’s reliability and longevity, coupled with HPE’s customer support for the ProLiant DL, which together provide an excellent and low maintenance device lifecycle. The Dell PowerEdge R presents a reliable solution for the cost-constrained; its SMB level base options are fairly priced overall and present a decent option for small branch offices, and generally, the product line presents a strong value all the way up when looking at the price for vCPU or RAM. Its fans tout its superiority for virtualization, particularly its support for VMware ESXi. Also, PowerEdge R servers are known to last for a long time, often surviving well beyond the warranty, with easy to find and execute firmware updates. LimitationsThere are just few limitations to the PowerEdge R and the ProLiant DL, but some complaints are: Opposite PowerEdge, HPE ProLiant DL driver firmware updates are described as cumbersome. On the hardware side, there are minor complaints about ProLiant processor speed, form factor, and a few other scattered complaints that the devices themselves (e.g. network ports lacking indicators, etc) indicate the solution is not quite as user friendly as some would like them to be. Dell support for the PowerEdge R does not get the same favorable feedback that HPE support does, and besides complaints of (slightly) inferior support, users complain about updates throughout the support lifecycle taking quite a while, with certain needed updates coming in far too slowly. Remote management of the PowerEdge R is not the equal of the ProLiant. PricingDell PowerEdge R pricing starts at $560 and ranges to just under $1700 for the one-socket servers. Two-socket PowerEdge R servers range from $1060 to $2370, and higher end four-socket servers range from about $16,000 to just under $17800. HPE ProLiant DL servers range from about $550 to about $1600 for various models of the DL20 and DL180, and for DL360 and DL380 servers from about $1600 to $16000. The higher-end DL580 is available from about $14500 at the entry-level to about $46000. |
