MicroStrategy Analytics

It is appropriate when wishing to show big data to a group that needs to make informed decisions quickly, and that does not have a technical background and cannot get bogged down in percentages and technicalities. For those that want it, however, Microstrategy provides gridded reports that make detailed examination of data easy. Both are simple to create

Pros

  • Visual Insight is a very good tool for data discovery and for create quick dashboard presentation. This is is basically a online web based portal where you have capability to quickly slice & dice the data . Also it provides you options to create derived metrics & derived attribute (MSTR 10) with various mathematical or statistical functions. One of the major mention would be the map based data visualization where you can plot data based on Latitude & Longitude. Also with MSTR 10 following limitations were removed i) using hyperlink ii) HTML 5 is implemented instead of Flash ,so easy to be rendered in mobile too iii) Adding images is possible for hardcoding company logo & symbols
  • Drilling Capabilities. This requires some good backend data modeling. Once you bring in all the facts and dimensions you are supposed to establish relationship between them & create hierarchies. Then it would be easy to drill more & more. For example - Device hierarchy - (Device Used by User--> Browser-->Operating System)
  • Data Source Connectivity.
  • Enterprise Manager is basically BI to BI environment which is used by administrators or executives to track reporting usage, report performance, developer efficiency or frequency of usage & thousands of other statistics which proves to be very helpful in monitoring the efficiency of the whole environment. Once you set up Enterprise miner( which is a bit tricky) you will be able to access all the in built documents or you can custom built dashboard based on your usage

  • Microsoft Power BI has excellent visualizations, patterns, spot charts.
  • It has a great length of connectivity with databases and other software. This includes: MS Access, PL/SQL, JSON, SAP HANA, MySQL, etc.
  • It's very cheap and helps focus on the right areas during presentations/meeting discussions.

Cons

  • There are many tools and products in the whole Analytics suite, I find this cumbersome and would like to see all these tools brought together
  • There is no version control built into the product. Versioning seems outdated and the principle way of handling versions is outdated and I think should be remodeled.
  • To a new user, learning the entirety of all MicroStrategy products is difficult and can take a long time to adapt to.

  • Although BI is making great updates on a daily basis, there are still some limitations involved with the data modeling and certain visualizations.

MicroStrategy, for the use by our company, was WAY overkill for their needs, both in functionality and price. It can be a great tool, but their licensing scheme is frustratingly painful and expensive for the quality of software they provide. If your company does not want to pay a DBA or DB Developer to write optimized T-SQL or queries, then by all means MicroStrategy may be your answer. For the price, you could pay an employee who knows your data and writes much more optimized T-SQL, and utilize the great features of MSFT Excel to slice and dice your data - this would work for 90% or more of the companies who want a great data warehouse. As far as the current implementation of the data warehouse, so much investment and time went into rolling out MicroStrategy that, unless there was a major data structure change, it does not make sense to recreate all the reports in Excel.

Usability

It is difficult to learn, but once you figure it out through training, it becomes simpler and the reasons for it's complexity becomes apparent.

PBI is very easy to use because of its similarity with power pivot and excel. DAX is the basic foundation language to be mastered to quickly build reports. Custom measures have been introduce to write instant DAX functions (But doesnt work all the time and need a understanding of DAX to debug). Easy to chart multiple charts and also third party charts

Reliability and Availability

I've never had an issue with MicroStrategy not being available due to MicroStrategy application malfunction. It is very robust and only failures I've seen were due to user error or the platform the machine running the service failed some how.

Performance

MicroStrategy Analytics10.0
Based on 1 answer
Being able to customize the performance based on the business need is extremely powerful. Proper configuration and understanding of the usage pattern is key, if the technical ability of the architect is not at top level, then the product will not be configured correctly which will lead to poor performance.

Support

If the staff does not know they answer they either find it out at some point, or put in a feature request. I have never been left hanging or been given an answer that is unsatisfactory to the solution. Even if there was no current solution, I was still told the logical reason and why.

Online Training

MicroStrategy Analytics7.8
Based on 4 answers
The MicroStrategy training is incredible, they have great online teachers. I was fortunate to be learning MicroStrategy while also implementing a project from scratch. This helped to solidify a lot of the concepts and be able to ask questions about real world problems in addition to class room exercises.

Implementation

MicroStrategy Analytics8.0
Based on 3 answers
Implementation is not easy, but also not difficult. With enough training on how to create a schema, and with the proper data warehouse schema the implementation can be very quick. If there are a lot of unknowns in the beginning phase of modeling, that can greatly extend the overall time taken for a fully implemented project.

Alternatives Considered

Tableau is a user friendly environment that creates visualizations, reports, and dashboards. The performance of Tableau is bad when querying large data sets. Users are not able to customize their reports as easily in Tableau as they can in MicroStrategy. Analysis and modeling is more difficult in Tableau than in MicroStrategy when using version 9.3.1.

First of all, Power BI is a fraction of the price of Tableau. Secondly, I found Tableau to be much less user-friendly than Power BI. Tableau is great if your organization wants to completely control BI and centralize it in the hands of highly skilled data analysts and IT teams. Power BI, on the other hand, is more egalitarian in that just about anyone can quickly understand how to use Power BI to create customized data models that are meaningful to them and churn out impressive looking interactive visuals. I highly prefer Power BI over Tableau

Once you've created your data model and visualizations, you can set your security and user settings for the dashboard and publish it. The assigned users can then access and interact with your dashboard online. Depending on the user's security, they can also download the source data used to create the dashboards. If the admin of the dashboard needs to refresh the data or create additional visualizations, all they need to do is click on one button to update all the users' web-based dashboards. I haven't used this function, but I've also heard the mobile dashboard sharing is seamless and works just as well

Scalability

MicroStrategy Analytics10.0
Based on 1 answer
This software is extremely scaleable, one can add more core servers which performs as a load balancing. The configurations available to manage usage patterns and daily activity are as high a caliber as any other enterprise level software. This product can be installed on both a windows and unix platform allow for integration on a budget.

Return on Investment

  • We abandoned the tool as it was not meeting our needs.

  • It's a good start for setting up customized dashboards.
  • Available for all users based on Office 365 platform we have in place.
  • Doesn't really allow depth of report - specifically customization of visual displays.
