NetWeaver

The SAP Enterprise Portal has been a well suited SAP extension for many years, it has been used for grouping and showing the netweaver abap and java programs over the web in a secure way and controlled by the stronger security layer created between netweaver roles, and portal roles, it is yet used by many organizations included ours, it can be used on intranet or internet with no problem. The only thing that would be less appropriate is in a green field project, because there is the cloud alternative which offers high integration with new technologies, the architecture is very similar, but higher on components and integration.

Oracle WebLogic Suite

This is very well suited to be used with web-based applications as it provides immense performance and is a centralized load-sharing solution. If you have multiple applications then this is an appropriate server as it can handle them easily and it is completely flexible and secure. For Images, the configuration part could be a bit hard to handle on this server.

Alternatives Considered

NetWeaver

SAP Enterprise Portal is a compress and easy to access to many sap netweaver applications, because many of them can't be accessed by web method so they can be integrated on the portal and be used, with an authorization profile to get access to them by the portal, its has like a mixed authorization protocol, the portal authorization to get to the right iviews that you need depending on your role on the organization, and a sub-level of roles and authorizations depending on the netweaver system you are using [with] the app.

Oracle WebLogic Suite

For as long as I have been with my company (and longer) we have leveraged WebLogic as our hosting/middleware platform of choice. I haven't actually had any in office experience with other alternatives. We've had an exclusivity contract with Oracle the whole time. Then again, Oracle Weblogic Suite is the industry standard for a reason.

Return on Investment

NetWeaver

  • It is quick to implement, its not hard to understand and apply it business logic for grouping, showing and managing the iviews and authorization.
  • The basis team that was administrating the netweaver platform its the same administering portal so its not necesary aditional consultants.
  • Negative is that it seems like everything is going to the Portal Cloud on BTP.

Oracle WebLogic Suite

  • Server startup can be controlled from the dashboard. In case a node is going down and has some issue, we can take that out or shut it down.
  • Connection pool management.
