Oracle Data Warehouse

Including other products, Oracle is very specialized in business support. Choosing Oracle Data Warehouse would be a safe choice for an enterprise-level company (more than a thousand employees). Healthcare organizations may want to consider Oracle, as they are typically conservative with privacy and security issues with patient data. Although cloud-based systems are widely being adopted in the healthcare industry (such as population research or genomics), core data sets (such as patients' sensitive medical records) may be better stored with a home-grown data center and warehouse solution.

Pentaho

The tool is fast, visually attractive and intuitive to use, but we also have an implementation of Qlik Sense and Pentaho pales in comparison to the overall capabilities. I recommend the tool, but everyone’s solution need is unique, so it may not be the right fit. Larger tools like Qlik are more versatile and easier to recommend. More expensive, yes, but you usually get what you pay for.

Pros

Oracle Data Warehouse

  • Able to handle very large data sizes efficiently from a performance, high availability and manageability perspective. This is accomplished through the Oracle Partitioning functionality. Partitioning allows large segments (tables, IOT index-organized tables, indexes) to be broken into smaller segments at the physical layer but treated as a whole at the logical layer.
  • Provides support for dual-format architecture through Oracle In-Memory functionality. Without any change to application code one can obtain in-memory performance. This functionality enables us to have the tables represented in both the row format and the column format using in-memory format. This is a huge boost for BI/analytic queries since the Oracle optimizer is able to intelligently choose the appropriate format.
  • Provision to materialize a subset of table data or table joins. This is through materialized views and the optimizer will rewrite the query against the base tables to make use of this materialized view. This provides a huge performance boost and is critical in VLDBs as in a data warehouse. The query rewrite is fully transparent to users.
  • Provides multiple compression capabilities. This is very useful not only for deducing the storage foot print but as well as increase performance at different layers of the infrastructure including query performance. The compression functionality can be applied against both structured and unstructured data.
  • With the advent of Engineered Systems (Exadata, Database Machine, SuperCluster) there are specific features and functionalities that can further boost the Oracle data warehouse. These are related to consolidation, Smart Scan, Storage Indexes, EHCC (Exadata hybrid columnar compression) and much more.
  • RAC - Real Application Clusters (with 2 or more nodes) provides functionality for high availability, performance and scaling as the work load increases. The parallelism is provided both within a node and as well as across nodes. If for any reason a node goes down the data warehouse is still available through other nodes and the running queries are transparently failed over to the surviving nodes.

Pentaho

  • Being able to use the OLAP Analyzer tool saved our organization a lot of time in not needing to develop an OLAP tool on our own.
  • The ability to customize the tool and integrate all the internationalization we required was pretty straightforward.

Cons

Oracle Data Warehouse

  • Customer support isn't the best out there. We usually have to wait about an hour to get some form of assistance.
  • Pricing is a bit higher than many of its competitors such as AWS Redshift.
  • Tweaking features requires dedicated staff. Software is fairly advanced. Would be difficult to use for newcomers.

Pentaho

  • At first, one needs to learn the basic concept of this software before going for the implementation. Once you are an expert on this then you will rock it.
  • Some of the basic features need to be enhanced such as sharing and collaboration capabilities
  • Needs to support automatically generated analytic visualizations or models

I will use Pentaho until I find a better tool with a better, easier to use report designer client. For now, Pentaho has been the most powerful reporting tool for our clients because of its ability to connect to Odoo, integrate in Odoo (reports are accessible in Odoo) and the flexibility in report design and parameter integration

I would have liked some hands on help in trying to match what Customers were already used to. Plus having a team of Java/BI folks was difficult to assemble since what required to be done in an object oriented fashion could have easily been done via a SQL construct. This hash of technologies was difficult to manage.

We are an Enterprise customer. They handle problems INSTANTLY when they are critical, including initiation an immediate WebEx screen share call when needed. Smaller/less-critical problems are handled within 1-2 days -- and NEVER fall off their radar, no matter how small. As needed, we can also leverage "professional services" from them -- much of which is included in our Enterprise contract. Finally, when a problem I have discovered turns out to be a bug..they create a JIRA for the fix, and make me a watcher. I love seeing notes come in showing me status updates of bugs filed because of something I found. They really are TOP-NOTCH.

Course Taken: DI1000 Pentaho Data Integration FundamentalsSetup A week before your class started, the instructor will start sending out class material and lab setup instructions. This is helpful so that you understand how the environment is laid out and can start reviewing the content. Ultimately it saved about a 1/2 day trying to setup with 10 other people online which was great! The CourseThe 3-day course was laid out like many other technical classes with 15-30 minutes instruction and 15-60 minutes of lab exercises. The instructor was very knowledgeable with the functionality from version to version and answered questions as we went along. I was amazed at some of the functionality that was available that I was not using at the time and quickly implemented changes to many existing transformations and jobs. The novice users seemed to catch on quickly and more experienced users explained how some of the functionality was used in their home environments. Towards the end there was enough time so that we were able to ask very directed questions about our own environments. Overall, I really found the class to be informative and deliver enough information to be dangerous. My skills improved and I was able to design better and efficient transformations for the HIE. Get the right people in before starting implementation. Start small and build as you go approach is time consuming and involves lot of rework.Evangalize within the organization the capabilities and limitations equally so that correct delivery expectations are set.Set expectations with the Customer that the tool cannot replace proprietary software in terms of stability/usability and that timelines could change given the new ness of the product.

Alternatives Considered

Oracle Data Warehouse

Oracle is, in my opinion, the top dog in this space. I feel like the other vendors are playing catch-up to where Oracle is right now. It is also likely the most expensive option out there.

Pentaho

I was not with the company when they selected Pentaho over any other tool. As per my experience, I would recommend Pentaho. One of the reasons are that it is open source. If you know JAVA, you can create your own plugins. I have found its customer support pretty good and quick. And the most important thing is the cost. If you are not using the DI server, you can just use the community edition and it should fulfil your purpose too.

Return on Investment

Oracle Data Warehouse

  • Very cost effective for large databases.
  • Very fast results on simple queries.
  • Analytical functionalities are of wide range, which makes it very cost effective.
  • For smaller businesses, it might be a great asset.
  • Some features are supposed to be bought separately, so one needs to consider this before licensing with Oracle DW.
Kartik Chavan | TrustRadius Reviewer

Pentaho

  • It's cheap. The version we have is free, so it has an immediate positive impact on ROI in that regard. However, a lot of our developers don't like it, which eats away our ability to be effective and productive.
  • It gets the job done. It may not be the most elegant tool, but for our purposes it works. There are probably better tools out there, and Pentaho has limited capabilities, but at the end of the day it works well enough.
