PROS Smart CPQ

Is my IT team ready to handle the challenges with data integration ? Are all the features offered by my current quoting tool being offered by Cameleon? Do I need a SaaS based quoting tool? Would it be easy and intuitive for my sales team (who, quite frankly, worship MS Excel) to use Cameleon ? Do I need a real-time/near-real-time quoting tool or would delays in data refreshes be acceptable

Salesforce CPQ

Very well suited if you need to standardize quotes, discounts etc. The level of customization and rules are really robust. The approval process is also very useful and allows for that automation in Salesforce directly as well. It is not as well suited if you need great customization of quote templates. The standardization is its strength if you need that, but if you don't or you need flexibility, CPQ is probably not the right tool.

Pros

PROS Smart CPQ

  • Salesforce.com integration via a plugin that lets end users access Cameleon CPQ systems.
  • Quoting made easier with complex business rules.
  • Good support from the Cameleon team with fixes and enhancements.

Salesforce CPQ

  • Salesforce CPQ easily maps to standard and custom fields within the opportunity in SFDC, allowing you to avoid time spent duplicating effort or copying and pasting deal criteria.
  • Salesforce CPQ connects directly to pre-determined price book, making it very easy to provide a proposal based on standard cost and/or add discounts to standard cost and reflect those reductions on the order form as appropriate.
  • Salesforce CPQ provides the ability for administrators to configure workflows for approval based on certain discount %'s on the standard cost, offering a quick and easy way to route automatically through the organization for approval.

Cons

PROS Smart CPQ

  • Integration with other onsite systems such as Oracle databases require the expertise of knowledgeable developers. Manual upload of flat files are always an option , but not necessarily the cleanest.
  • Better Cameleon CPQ Designer UI would go a long way. Currently UI is a stark contrast to the intuitive UI of SalesForce.com or similar SaaS based tools. Not too much to ask for , considering the fact that we work in the era of Facebook and Twitter.
  • Real time data availability is a long way to go for Cameleon CPQ. Updates to data pushed over as batches to Cameleon are reflected at Salesforce.com only after a 'versioning' process is launched. Current recommended frequency for this process is once a day (an upgrade to make it twice a day is in the works).

Salesforce CPQ

  • More complex product and configuration rules seem overly complex. If any math is required in a rule, even simple quantity rules can very complicated.
  • Quote templates while easy to customize are very simple in their layout. We'd like to be able to have more dynamic and visually appealing quote templates.
  • Guided selling is lacking in very basic ways. You can't create questions with dependencies for "if this, then that" or an intuitive questionnaire or guided selling wizard.

There are a few features that we expected from the tool but Cameleon's CPQ has fallen short on these. Possible enhancements and product fixes should be made as soon as possible to change the perspective. Unexpected bugs in the tool have come up during the roll-out that has caught the implementation team off-guard

The company is very easy to work with and is growing by leaps and bounds. We do not anticipate switching vendors anytime in the near future

The support from the team at Salesforce CPQ has been solid and consistent. Any time someone from my team is in need of assistance, the Salesforce CPQ team is always available and extremely knowledgeable. I feel like we are fully supported if there are glitches with the program or if I am stuck in a situation where I do not know how to accomplish a task.

Salesforce CPQ

During evaluation of a CPQ solution we reviewed multiple products. In our business, we sell HVAC equipment, but that equipment typically has to fit engineering specifications for a building. Some of the solutions we viewed were oriented to configure a solution based on pre-determined options, such as selecting options onto a standard automobile chassis. Other solutions offered similar functionality as Steelbrick though were not developed on the Force.com platform. Our requirements included integration with the Force.com platform and Steelbrick met that requirement along with functional requirements

Return on Investment

PROS Smart CPQ

  • A salesforce.com -esque approach to CRM has a whole gamut of advantages. Cameleon CPQ complements this approach.
  • Expect down times , feature problems or general disagreement about Cameleon's capabilities initially. This is true for adopting any new tool or technology. Hold on and it will tide over.
  • As a person who has used Cameleon purely as a developer standpoint , I do not have anything more to add-on.

Salesforce CPQ

  • Positive impacts include the time it takes to adjust quotes - that is if the sales team is trained to know how to do this. It takes under 5 minutes to edit quotes.
  • Negative impacts include the fact that once a quote is approved in our approval process, edits cannot be made unless certain fields are reversed, which is a huge pain. A lot of the edits that sales requests to make after a quote has been approved can be attributed to the lack of training and support access they have fromCPQ though.
