User-Friendly Design: Several users have mentioned that SumTotal has a very user-friendly design, making it easy for non-programmers to configure their LMS interface. This has allowed for customization of various environments for different groups and integration of external web applications through iFraming, such as social media or news feeds.

Customizable Features: Reviewers have appreciated the customizable features offered by SumTotal, such as custom color schemes, logos, widgets, news feeds, and training messages. These features have allowed them to create a personalized environment for several different clients, tailoring the LMS to each client's specific needs.

Clean Front-End User Interface: Many reviewers have highlighted the clean front-end user interface of SumTotal, which makes it visually appealing and easy to navigate for both administrators and learners. This intuitive interface enhances the overall user experience and simplifies navigation within the system.

Lack of Functionality for Adding Multiple Contractor Companies: Some users have expressed frustration with the software's limited functionality when it comes to adding multiple contractor companies to the hiring funnel and conducting partner level analysis. They feel that this feature is essential for managing their contractor relationships effectively.

Absence of AI Capabilities for Generating Insights and Recommendations: Users have mentioned disappointment in the software's lack of AI capabilities, specifically when it comes to generating insights and recommendations based on yearly or quarterly data. They believe that incorporating AI would greatly enhance the decision-making process and improve overall efficiency.

Need for More Pre-built Reports: Several users have stated that they would like to see a broader range of pre-built reports within the program. This would eliminate the need for creating custom reports from scratch, saving time and effort. Users feel that having more pre-built reports readily available would provide them with valuable insights without requiring extensive report customization skills.

Companies can't remove reviews or game the system. Here's why

We use SumTotal Maestro across our franchise network for providing access to online courses for our owners, their managers, as well as their employees. Every manager looks for ways to on-board new employees as quickly as possible and online learning helps reduce that time. Online learning also provides easy access from anywhere with internet access, 24/7 to employees wanting to continue developing skills in their respective fields, as well as learning new subjects.
  • Assign complete learning plans to users so they don't have to spend time searching for courses.
  • Export learner's transcripts so managers can easily see their employee's progress.
  • Embed Social Media feeds that are relevant to their business.
It works well for just uploading SCORM compliant courses. We don't use it for managing ILT courses as it was complicated when we last tried it. We also do not sell courses, but I don't think that it's capable of doing that.
  • We don't measure ROI with Maestro, but mostly provide it as a service/benefit to our network.
  • Based on owner feedback, we know that it helps them manage their time so that the new employee can take their required courses and then put that new knowledge to work. This allows for owners/managers to spend their time on other things and focus on the most critical issues with their new employees.
Maestro is a little dated looking. Younger users are looking for something up-to-date, interactive, fun, and easy to use and Maestro has a ways to go with this.
They always answer my calls and, in most cases, are able to help me.

Anyone can learn how to use Maestro. It's very easy to upload new courses and manage them. The hardest part to learn was Batch Import to make changes to multiple users.
  • On-boarding new employees
  • Continuous development for existing employees
  • Assign complete learning plans to employees so they don't have to search for individual courses relevant to their position.
  • Automatic course assignments based on user role.
We are currently researching other LMSs to look for a more up-to-date LMS, as well as lower our overall cost for an LMS and a content library.

Our company provides LMS Support for a large company using SumTotal. The whole company uses SumTotal as their primary LMS, about 80K users.
  • Easily customizable notifications
  • TMU tool allows for quick mass uploads
  • Configurable front end
If a company requires specific functionality, SumTotal appears unwilling to be flexible.
  • Having all training/learning records in one tool allows users to have their record follow them when they move in the business. This reduces the need for retraining and time spent on data entry.
SuccessFactors is more user friendly, however their service is less than stellar. SumTotal was chosen because of price and customer service.
We have made an investment in SumTotal and changing our LMS at this point would be costly.
I do not find SumTotal to be intuitive. I feel we need to adjust our needs to meet the functionality available in the tool.

We are able to deliver mass education through the LMS as well as track completion and competency of our employees. It enables us to communicate consistently and effectively across our campuses as well with those that are spread throughout the state. Staff can rely on a constant and consistent source to find new communication, education or track their educational experiences.
  • It allows for simulations to address complex scenarios in the healthcare setting.
  • We can quickly review reports to see completion rate of an activity.
  • We have empowered our upper managment to utilize the tracking functionality to have quicker compliance on education modules.
I think the links not being active to send the users into the activity causes a lot of frustrations for our users.
  • Consistent educational approach
  • Allows end users more acceptable means of receiving the education
  • Tracks completion rate
I have transitioned from a position who supported the product to a position where I use the product. I continue to be impressed with the robustness of the product and how efficient it is. It is a user friendly software that can be used to navigate and accomplish tasks to meet organizational requirements.

We use it to provide eLearning asynchronous training to our clients. We decide what to develop, and our clients buy subscriptions to our training library. Our training supports their requirements to earn CLPs and certifications in their fields. Our employees also use it for the same purpose.
  • SumTotal has a very user friendly design, making it easy for non-programmers to configure their LMS interface, customize various environments for different groups, and to integrate numerous external web applications through iFraming, such as social media or news feeds. I was able to configure a custom environment for several different clients, making it feel like their own LMS, such as a custom color scheme and logos, custom widgets (which are section of any page), news feeds, training messages, and custom learning plans.
When choosing an LMS, you need to decide what features are most important. Things like single-sign on, 508 compliance, ability to support mobile learning, price per user, ability to customize for various audiences, and technical support. When I chose our LMS, it was called GeoEngage because of price and all of the tech support was on the East Coast. The LMS was bought by SumTotal a few years ago. We originally wanted SumTotal, but it was too expensive for our small company. Now we get both, and we continue to get great customer support.
  • The ROI has been positive, and we are able to train more of our clients than ever before.
  • articulate
When I came to my company, they had been using a "light" LMS called Articulate. It was cheap and bare bones; i.e. not a lot of features, really just a platform to launch eLearning from and not real interface for student to utilize. When I began to overhaul the training department, this was one of the first things I changed. Articulate would only run courses built in their software, and the software was not 508 compliant. In addition, we had no ability to create learning plans, house transcripts, customize the interface, or manage the students. I made the choice to select and LMS that was a true LMS with all of the features that were critical to our clients' needs. Thus far, SumTotal has been able to support all of our needs, except one; mobile learning that is media rich.
We have been with SumTotal for 4 years, and will renew for a 5th. We like to product and we have not yet grown to a size where a custom "homegrown" LMS is necessary. The only reason we would leave SumTotal would be if the ROI is no longer positive and we can make more profit by creating our own LMS and hosting internally.
