Overall Satisfaction with CollabNet VersionOne

Our team uses VersionOne as part of our agile process. It is an enterprise approved tool. Product Owners enter user stories. We do Sprint and Release planning and scheduling using VersionOne. Our backlogs are maintained in VersionOne. Defects can be entered and tracked. We use the tool for collaboration and notifications are used and team members can subscribe to various notifications. Voting is done through the tool. It has really been integrated into our SDLC process and has become a way of life for how we do things.
  • Backlog maintenance
  • Notifications
  • Planning for both sprints and releases
  • Defect tracking
  • Storyboards
  • Collaboration
  • Better support for our hybrid methodology where things aren't 100% agile.
  • At first, it was difficult for the teams as we were learning Agile and VersionOne. But VersionOne provided us with great training and support. As such the teams were able to quickly adopt and embrace Agile.
  • Our teams are now more efficient.
  • Our time to market has decreased significantly.
The waterfall evangelists wanted MS Project. Some Agile enthusiasts wanted Rally and some wanted VersionOne. We did an evaluation and looked at how each tool supported them. We mainly use VersionOne, but since the PM team is from a center of excellence, they still use Project. But I believe that will change as the Agile initiative has started enterprise-wide. But to answer the question, VersionOne was just the tool that supported all of our use cases and was easy to use. The team member feedback from the pilot really pointed to VersionOne as the winner and leader of the pack at the time the decision was made.
VersionOne provides outstanding training. They have Product Owner training that I recommend every Product Owner attend. They have scrum master training and other agile training that was well worth the money paid because it made the teams more productive. And the support for the tool is incredible. These people live and breathe Agile and are evangelists and enthusiasts.

I feel the tool has really helped our organization embrace and adopt Agile. We were one of the first development teams within the Enterprise to do so. And since we had all team members using VersionOne and taking the training, we have been able to make this a way of life and not just another tool we through at the team. In my opinion, we are still constrained by the Enterprise and there are things that we still have to do that aren't agile but are waterfall. Sometimes it's easy to get the tool to support these and sometimes it's not. I understand that because the tools focus is on Agile teams. But it's hard to get a large enterprise to go Agile and it takes time. Our team adopted Agile over 10 years ago. The rest of the enterprise is just now catching up with us.
