Overall Satisfaction with HipChat

At my previous organization we used HipChat across our entire SaaS product organization to quickly communicate between Customer Services/Success, Engineering and Product Management departments. In addition to enabling topic based conversations without the horrendous anti-scale of email, we relied heavily on integrations for alerting across our infrastructure and tools so that information was available to all who were interested. If you are using Bitbucket, JIRA and Confluence the synergy becomes awesome.

HipChat was an awesome improvement for us compared to Campfire. We already love the Atlassian universe for Bitbucket and JIRA and HipChat does a great job of completing the set with a centralized chat medium that connects to all of your other services and solutions. We found the user interface to be greatly improved over Campfire's and the integrations with the rest of our tooling universe was a no brainer.
HipChat became the centralized communications hub for everything from customer support tickets, cloud infrastructure operational alerts to code commits, testing results and build successes/failures. This was achievable due to HipChat's bountiful number of integrations and robust RESTful API to use if the perfect integration could not be found. The impact of this on our organization was greatly reduced email volume and significantly reduced time to action and prioritization for issues and course corrections.
As explained previously, HipChat has an overwhelming number of integrations right out of the box with most of the services anyone is likely to be using. In the scenario where you cannot find what you need, their RESTful API allows developers of an organization to easily create their own customized integration.
iOS - The mobile app has come along way in terms of performance and notification consistency. For iOS specifically I use it heavily anytime I am not at my computer and even outside of typical working hours if immediate communication with a coworker(s) is required.
I think HipChat excels for anyone looking for consolidated, real-time instant messaging in a professional context. Its appropriateness could vary wildly depending on an organization's culture and agreed upon ways of using the tool.

Integrating HipChat

HipChat has many integrations out of the box. However, if you cannot find what you are looking for, HipChat has a full RESTful API you can tap into. It is easy enough to integrate everything from a simple cURL script to a fully baked application integration layer.
