Overall Satisfaction with IBM Cloud Object Storage

IBM Cloud Object Storage [is] used for training and and data storage. It is mainly used by the data science department. It enables users who are not the most familiar with difficult devops procedures to work with big data and manage their data. It addresses problems like data synchronization, user training, and so on.
  • Ease of Use.
  • Extensive documentation.
  • One stop shop with devops integration.
  • Loading speed.
  • CLI integration not as declarative as other providers.
  • Certain documentation not up to date.
  • Helped to speed up sprint.
  • Helped to onboard non-technical users.
  • Cost is sometimes by finance departments.
It hasn't been the most useful to our team, because our stack don't necessary expose apache spark; familiarity with apache spark is sometimes an issue with data scientist who have tensorflow or pytorch backgrounds, as it requires a decent amount of framework specific knowledge. Although SQL queries are used more extensively and helps with on-demand analysis.
Functionalities like data transfer to multiple regions has been very helpful. It allows us to build batch processes whenever and wherever, and not needing to worry much about underlining physical connections. It also enables things like multi-part upload and download with ease. Overall a high-speed transfer increases fault tolerance of applications that's sitting on top.
Yes, it has. Different storage tiers allows programmatic access of changing costs. It helps devops to manage necessary load and fine tune tiers for specific applications. We are able to leverage these pre-built, vetted solutions to build our production environment faster and plugin such storage to solve common customer problems.
Aws platforms requires a lot of prerequisite knowledge, which is of very high cost to developers and data scientists in general. Although we were able to facilitate training for usage of aws, the overhead of maintenance and onboarding still poses a big problem. This is why IBM Cloud Object Storage comes as a very good out of box solution.
  • IBM Cloud Foundry
We use Cloud Foundry for deployments and it is a very initiative tool to users from different teams. User are able to use continuous integration with both platforms and it is convenient for data scientist who do not have deep knowledge with CI/CD to use these products day to day.
Cloud object storage is well suited for storing static assets, things like images, videos, music clips, or any other type of unstructured large data blobs. It is especially suited for use cases when users need storage across different regions and time zones.
It is potentially not suited for cases when there is large amounts of read and write at a very high speed.
