Overall Satisfaction with Jamf Pro

We manage almost 1000 MacOS and iOS devices in a Higher Education institution for over 4000 employees. We have leveraged the capabilities of JAMF to actively manage our fleet of devices and computers to ensure that software is correctly installed across all managed devices as well as for tracking and pushing applications for imaging of new and reimaged workstations.
  • Fleet Management and tracking usage totals on workstations broken down by application and user
  • Interaction with DEP processes in order to simplify the limited-touch method of pushing required software and configurations to newly purchased Mac and iOS devices
  • Coordination with Apple's VPP system to manage and distribute Apps to iOS devices.
  • The re-image process using DEP is a little cumbersome and requires some extra steps in terms of either wiping the drives or setting up an additional netboot server to accomplish efficiently.
  • There is a short window for idle time when logged into JAMF console.
  • There was a bug with hidden accounts and FileVault 2 in MacOS 10.13 that was a headache.
  • It has definitely made MacOS and iOS management much simpler and has provided positive ROI.
  • We are a non-profit educational institution and not bound by the same business objectives as a for-profit.
  • It has allowed a small staff (one) to manage a large fleet with relative ease, thus improving efficiency.
This decision was made prior to my joining the institution so I was not involved in the decision making process and have not evaluated any other solutions. This was currently in place when I took over the position and I have had no cause to evaluate other solutions as this has meet all of our institutional needs.
I could imagine that there are scenarios in which there would be a cost prohibition in a smaller environment or for older machine environments. I don't feel like I'm a qualified judge to properly interpret what scenarios would be JAMF inappropriate. I do know that it works well in our Higher Education environment with MacOS and iOS devices.
