Overall Satisfaction with Schoology

We've been utilizing Schoology to bridge the gap of classroom to student collaboration and communication. Over the past 4 years, using Schoology, we have been able to go online with blended digital lessons from our teachers and allow students to engage with their own learning at their own pace. Students are able to create, share and save resources independently and submit work for revision or review. Online collaboration features allow students and teachers to engage in discussions that are threaded and "above board" so everyone can follow along. We also use synchronization services to allow students' grades to populate into our PowerSchool SIS environment, which has been beneficial to teachers and saves time eliminating double entry.
  • Schoology handles communications and notifications beautifully. Keeps everyone informed in a classroom of what is going on and who has posted what.
  • Additional third party applications are awesome. No need to sign out to use Google, TurnitIn, Khan Academy, etc. They are built in giving users access to the tools they use most within the LMS.
  • Roster automation is great. This has reduced the backend load of technicians and data experts having to organize files from the SIS to import on a scheduled task rotation. A few clicks and you are ready for the school year to begin.
  • Gradebook sync needs some help. Schoology updates the platform frequently which is good, but not all key problem areas are addressed in each update. They could raise this rating a bit by getting back to core functionality resolutions first, then added user experiences second.
  • Reduced staff costs in time to manage the rosters since it is automated.
  • Time saved from teachers importing data between systems to ensure grades and rosters are set.
  • Manage multiple third party apps that are supported by Schoology in a single pane of glass, user experiences is heightened.
We evaluated Canvas, Haiku and Edmodo and Schoology won hands down. User interface was appealing, teacher and admin tools were most desired and the backend automation pieces aligned best to our environment.
We started at a "free" version trial and scaled up to an enterprise-wide solution in a K-12. Their dedicated integration specialists made sure it was a seamless transition. This works for independent classrooms all the way up to districtwide initiatives. My recommendation is to get colleagues on board and pay for the enterprise functionality. It saves time in the end and provides useful tools for support and analytics.
