Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform

I needed something to replace the Server Backup
program which comes with Windows Server. The native Microsoft Tool works,
but is basic and does not provide alerts if a
backup job fails or succeeds. I also experienced other issues to do with the
software such as fairly common errors with VSS Writers which would cause backup
jobs to fail. It was frustrating having to manually check the backup system twice a day to ensure it was actually
working. Cue Veeam. After a fair bit of research, Veeam was the
company which came up the most often as being recommended and in use. Even
better than other platforms such as AOMEI, Macrium, Acronis etc there was a community version with a lot
of features and although it is limited to 10 workloads - it is full product and
not a time trial. I found that there was a lot of supporting information
and tutorials on the internet. I first installed it
as a VM to test it's functionality and I am very happy to say it didn't
disappoint. It is very quick, includes encryption and alerts me whether backup
jobs are successful or whether they fail - it isn't often they fail. I have
recently moved from the test VM to a physical device for the Veeam backup
server and implemented it. This particular backup is used to save encrypted
data onto a removeable device, which is my immutable backup. 10 stars!
  • Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
  • Virtualized workloads
  • Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
  • Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
  • Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
  • Data backup time is fast - much faster than Windows Server Backup
  • Encryption of data
  • Multiple backup storage devices/cloud area types
  • Alerts/reports are clear and simple
  • Setting up for the first time will take time - possibly more setup wizards for jobswould help

Do you think Veeam Data Platform delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Did Veeam Data Platform live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Veeam Data Platform go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Veeam Data Platform again?

Yes

We have one physical server running a number of virtual servers. So for our immutable backup we only need to have one backup job for the whole device. This was anticipated and our school does have other backup systems in place e.g. for critical business data to cloud and a backup from the cloud to a local NAS for Google and Microsoft data.
  • Less time required managing the backup system due to alert system and virtually no failures of jobs
  • No initial financial outlay for the product
The major factor was the unreliability of Windows Server Backup and therefore the amount of time taken up by myself and my technician to maintain and monitor it.

The community edition is well-suited to my school environment as the school is relatively small and tight budgets make it hard to choose the appropriate product for the business.

If my school was to expand in the future, I would purchase the licensed version as the community edition would not allow enough backup jobs to complete. Additionally, the paid for version does include more enterprise features and would be more appropriate for a larger organisation.
