Veeam Backup & Replication

Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform

We use Veeam Backup and Replication to backup our VMware environment. We had long backup windows with our old backup software and need a solution that narrowed that windows. Veeam delivered on that. Our backup times have drastically shortened and restoring a VM is almost instant. I am very happy with this backup software and really don't have any complaints.
  • Virtualized workloads
  • Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
  • In addition to back up, we also snapshot some of these workloads
  • Cloud-hosted VMs within AWS or Azure
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • License portability as your environment needs change
  • Automating test restores to validate recoverability
  • “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • Restoring a VM to production
  • options to view/restore application based backups Exchange and SQL
  • ability to turn on a VM from a backup in a test environment to test the backup or troubleshoot without affecting production.
  • the licensing model that requires you to keep paying every year to use the software is my only complaint about the software

Yes

I have about 50 workloads, mostly virtual machines and some workstations, that we backup using Veeam. I am backing up more than I expected. Since it worked so well and our backup time were reduced I had more time to backup other workloads. This has been really helpful being able to protect of workloads that I was not able to protect on the old backup software.
  • backup windows times have been drastically reduced
  • restoring of individual files or entire VM's was smooth and fast.
Our old backup solution could not handle our evolving infrastructure and I needed to either upgrade that solution or look for another one. I the process of looking at other solutions we discovered that Veeam could do what we needed and more. I have no regrets in switching our backup solution to Veeam.
We are still have all of our servers onprem. They are virtualized with VMware and split between our main office and a colocation datacenter. I like that Veeam has cloud based backup solutions for if and when we decide to move some or all of our workloads to the cloud. I won't have to look for another backup software when we find ourselves moving to the cloud since Veeam has those capabilities.
I have not needed to use the NAS/File-share backup solution so I have no input or experience with that.
In our environment Veeam has been really well suited for us. It integrates well with our VMware environment and allowing us to do storage snapshots on our Dell enterprise SAN's. It also allow for tape backup. We have compliance requirements that still need us to use tape backup and Veeam was one of the few venders that still offered that.
