1Password

1Password should be used to store any information securely, including logins/passwords, credit card and bank information, drivers licenses, software licenses, notes and documents, and many other things. You shouldn't really use the same password for multiple sites, and 1Password is great for generating random passwords, storing them, and making them easy to retrieve. The group plans work great for sharing information between people as well. It really works best on a Mac. I've used 1Password on Windows a bit, and it works just fine, but it doesn't seem to work as well as on the Mac.

Forcepoint URL Filtering

If you need granular user and computer reporting, Websense is very reliable. It will provide strong protection and filtering once set up. If you aren't savvy with the technology involved, engage support early in your configuration, as it is complicated. The hybrid mobile client works well for your laptop users that you need protected and reporting out in the real world, but again is complicated to initially set up. Once you get it set up, the websense product is very solid. If you don't need the reporting and don't need it to be accurate to the person/computer, then it is more inline with the web filtering offered integrated by the various firewall providers out there and you can decide whether you want to have a separate appliance for web filtering or have it as part of the all in one firewall solution.

Pros

1Password

  • It's secure. 1Password makes no bones about the fact that its encryption is state-of-the-art (it has to be, right?). While my knowledge of encryption is entry-level at best, I do understand that 1) having a secure, encrypted master password file is key, and 2) this allows users to store unique passwords for every login, which means that even if hackers steal a password at one site, they can't use that same password to gain entry into all of your systems.
  • It syncs across devices, seamlessly. Whether I'm at home or at work, I can find every password in seconds.
  • It's a great place to store other information you need to keep secure: notes, software licenses, social security numbers of family members, etc.
  • 1Password uses Apple's FaceID feature quite well... now I don't even need to type in my master password when logging in on my phone. I just open the app and look at the screen and viola! I'm in.
  • 1Password's iOS and Chrome integrations are top-notch as well. Most of the time I don't even need to open the app -- I can just use the plugin on my browser, or iOS will suggest the password to use (again, with FaceID) for a website. Again, terrific time-savings.
  • 1Password's ability to generate strong passwords based on a formula may not be anything new, but it certainly is more helpful than trying to come up with one yourself. One click will suggest passwords that are extremely hard to break.

  • The Websense (Forcepoint) reporting is verify accurate and granular. Many solutions don't integrate as closely with Active Directory and there can be windows were traffic can be slightly inaccurate. We are confident in Websense to give us accurate reports when we need them.
  • We had a few hiccups in getting our appliances configured wccp with our Cisco firewalls. I engaged support and they were extremely helpful in getting us the updated Cisco configuration we needed to get the appliances communicating.
  • The management and reporting console are smooth and intuitive. I can easily follow traffic and patterns to locate infected computers on the network that need to be remedied and also help to triangulate network abusers with our wifi components to remove problem users from our environment.

Cons

1Password

  • The starting price for teams can be pricey if you are not prepared for the costs. If you want the best features, you have to pay for them.
  • Setting up the integration with Dropbox requires a bit of tech know how. It is not rocket science but the average person will be a bit confused if they do not have IT knowledge. This alone is the biggest challenge to using it

  • While the reports are easy to generate, analyzing the data can be challenging. For example, it records every hit on a webpage, so for something like Facebook, every time the page refreshes itself or changes an ad etc. it records it. So, if a user goes to Facebook and actually clicks on two things to read, it could end up showing the had forty clicks, which makes it challenging to HR to determine where the line of "extreme usage" actually is based on these skewed reports.
  • We have had three times in 8 years where the software had a table that got corrupted that synchs data from AD, so the usernames were not available for reporting. We had to run reports for a while based on IP address, which could change frequently since we're DHCP like most companies, so the data in the reports were essentially useless during this period. Support helped us solve the issue, but each time it took about a week.
  • Support has managed to solve every problem, issue or questions we've had, but it has been slower than most of our vendors. Where we typically get same day support from almost everyone, most Websense support tickets have been 1) open a ticket wait for a call back, 2) get an email requesting more data.. wait, 3) get an email requesting a time to work with us.. wait, 4) get a confirmation than actually get on a shared session to work, 5) be told they had logs to review first or needed to do research and would get back to us in a day or two... 6) more emails... 7) finally an email resolution or screen share to walk us through the resolution or setting change. Typically this was a 3 to 5 day turn around time. Since it's not a critical system for us, though extremely useful, it's not been a bid deal here.

It's easy to use, easy to setup and maintain and their new Forcepoint hosted solution includes new security features that will sandbox a website and test it for malicious code prior to passing it through to the user machine. This is an excellent cyber security prevention technique and we will be upgrading to this shortly.

The 1Password app design is top notch, much better than a couple other password managers I've looked at. The app and service are very flexible, allowing for many different types of data storage. The browser extensions generally work very well, allowing for easy access to login information while using pretty much any modern web browser.

It's pretty easy to use but does take some getting used to. After an hour of using the software, you will be good to go.

I haven't had a lot of issues with 1Password in the past, but I have browsed the 1Password support forums a bit when I have needed an answer for something. The support staff seems to be very responsive. They seem to respond to pretty much everything posted in the support forums.

Alternatives Considered

1Password

LastPass is a good free password manager for those just getting started. Its simple ability to share and manage passwords all in the cloud makes it an obvious alternative to 1Password. The only challenge is that it is browser based. For us, we needed a setup that allowed an app to be downloaded on a users' computer as well as their mobile devices for easier access to information and shared resources. 1Password fit the bill because we were impressed with the Dropbox integration and apps that sync in real time to give users updated login info.

We had evaluated solutions from Cisco and Palo Alto in addition to Websense. The firewall integrated solutions, for the most part, lacked the some of the granularity we needed in our configurations. The firewall solutions also weren't as accurate at tying the traffic back to specific users. The Websense solution had the granularity and accurate reporting we needed and cost wise was inline with the additional licensing that the firewall integrated solutions required.

Return on Investment

1Password

  • We have been able to save at least 50% more time when setting up new users or removing users from our setup. Previously we had to log in and change passwords manually which took a lot of time and was not secure. 1Password has made this process easier for us and thus made us more efficient
  • In terms of workflow, our teams are now able to share and have access to information quickly as they can accept or request password access from administrators and continue their work.

  • The websense filtering has helped us to reduce and eliminate productivity losses from some gaming and streaming services.
  • We have been able to lower our liability from illegal streaming services and also adult content viewing (and also reduced the internet uses related to those services).
  • The filtering service has helped us to prevent virus spread on the network and also helped as a layer to pinpoint affected endpoints, that had gone unnoticed by our antivirus solution. By alerting to those early infections, we can quarantine the device before the infection spreads or affects other endpoints.
  • The solution has given the HR department reporting they needed when employees were under review without having to pull any local logs or have any local solutions installed.
  • The hybrid client has worked well in a few remote offices, meaning we didn't need a separate proxy service to filter and protect that traffic.
