If you do not have a large budget and are a large organization, I would steer clear of Actuate. If you are looking to do very complex washboarding, I would not use them. Your developers have to be very skilled to work with this. Plan to bring in consultants if necessary to help your process. Adhoc reporting is weak. If your pricing is user based and you expand, this could be very expensive.

Klipfolio would work best in an open communication team where showing performance for each team is key. Dashboards would help everyone in the team/organization to identify how their actions and being transferred to positive effects on KPIs. By removing the knowledge barriers between different source systems such as Google Analytics, Survey Monkey, Google Ads or SQL databases, any user can view performance in a common visual interface provided by Klipfolio.

Pros

  • The software can be tied to Actuate Basic which is much like MS Visual Basic and can provide an almost custom application feel to some reports.
  • Actuate had field movement tools that allowed a user to line rows up and disperse them across a report based off the width. Comparative tools like Crystal did not provide these.
  • The Actuate Server also gave easy access to review who had been running a report or reports via its web interface.

  • Knowledgebase - Recently Klipfolio has made improvements to their interface and functionality allowing it easier for a non-formula minded marketer (like myself) to use. Being the visual person that I am, I find the video library as well as the knowledgebase with examples helpful and reference them often to build the visual component I need.
  • The hover effect showing the details of a particular data point is extremely helpful and enables the user to take a closer look at specifics if they choose.
  • Sharable. Klipfolio makes it easy to share the dashboard with stakeholders in a variety of formats - PDF, JPG, CSV, etc.
  • Klipfolio Ninja Services has assisted me in advancing the dashboards I create for our clients to an entirely new level. Most often I have the vision and know how I want to parse the data -- but sometimes the right formula or a better, more straightforward way of bringing the data to life happens with Janice, our Klipfolio Ninja!

Cons

  • Support for more databases, such as other BI tools.
  • There can be more graph types.

  • It may seem like a small issue, but to get to your monthly invoice it is pretty buried in sub pages and can be confusing for some to find.
  • When you login for the first time it does take a little bit for all of your widgets to populate its data.
  • When you scroll through a dashboard, the header of the site is very jumpy and a little bit distracting.

There are some very complex performance reports, which can not be handled in other tools. If we want to create our own framework in any reporting tool then Actuate is the best choice

Breadth of Deployment

Adopted by infrastructure, ad-operations, sales, business, and account support. We are a small company and maintain a small number of accounts on this system. If pricing would be acceptable, we would roll this out to all of our customers.

Alternatives Considered

It is vastly superior to these in many ways, for complex reporting it is a much more sophisticated solution. Visualizations are very good. Javascript extensibility is very powerful, others don't support this or as well. Pentaho and MS are both OLAP oriented. Pentaho is moving more toward big data, which was not our primary focus. Others are stuck in the Crystal Reports Band metaphor.

I have searched on the internet for different KPI Dashboard providers and I chose Klipfolio as they offered a free trial. Compared to all others Klipfolio was very easy to use, which made the difference in the beginning. The possibilities to integrate with so many different systems also was an important aspect of the decision.

Basic scorecard without iServer and Birt360 modules are extremely limited in reporting ability. Scheduling pushed reports also fairly technical

Dashboards can be shared by using public links that can be password protected. You can also have user logins, however, if you need many users you need one of the more expensive plans.

I have not yet found a thing I could not display with Klipfolio. The Excel integration is working really good, and it's very useful as Excel sheets are used for different purposes in our company.

Return on Investment

  • Actuate can handle 50 to 60 sub reports inside a report very well.
  • Dynamically creating the datasource, chart, graph, reports are the main advantages. We can do any level of drilling, and can create a performance matrix dashboard efficiently.
No photo available
  • It's still fairly new so it's hard to say.
