Adobe Captivate

Adobe Captivate can open up the door to eLearning, but it is not quite as intuitive as I would have liked to see. There is a lot of support for Adobe Captivate, but it must be constantly sought out on specific topics. The integration of Adobe Stock and Assets gives Captivate a strong push.

The key questions I would ask are:Am I seeking the ability to educate with interactive content or document education? HealthcareSource NetLearning is stronger in documenting. How specific do I need to be in educating? For house-wide and department-wide assignments HealthcareSource NetLearning works great. Distinguishing to micro-groups are more difficult.Do I want to integrate with other products? This is impossible at this time. (3rd party courseware is possible, I am speaking of 3rd party report building software and other software integrations.)

Pros

  • Adobe Captivate records screen shots click-by-click. This allows us to control exactly what steps the users see.
  • Adobe Captivate allows voice-over dubbing. This feature lets us narrate the steps people need to take to learn the products we are covering.
  • Adobe Captivate allows closed captioning. This lets us add voice-over narration, but also allows users to turn off the sound and read the instructions. Many users participate in training from a cubicle where sound travels too broadly to listen to the voice narration.

  • The user interface is simple. Everything is on one page and incredibly easy to navigate.
  • The program is solid. We haven't had a downtime in years.
  • The program syncs with our HR system very well.

Cons

  • Although Adobe Captivate is powerful, it is not at all intuitive. Before attending a training on Captivate, we had no idea what we were doing. The learning curve is steep.
  • Captivate's video editing skills could be improved. Other products, such as Camtasia, blow Captivate out of the water in this regard.
  • The audio functionality is odd when integrating with Adobe's Audition program. You can record the tracks in audition and then pull them in or record directly to a slide within Captivate. If you record within Captivate, the audio quality and volume does not match any track brought in from Audition.

  • The NetLearning University Anytime Links are not accurate. So, after trying to fix an issue myself, I had wasted a large portion of time trying to follow directions and complete myself.
  • The training times are in a different time zone and most of them are before I start work for the day.

There is no doubt in my mind that we will be using Adobe Captivate for years to come. There are so many uses for the software that we are just scratching the surface. The more we use it, the better it gets. This is a great option for anyone looking for an eLearning authoring tool.

We will continue using NetLearning because it does what we need it to do from a compliance and educational standpoint.

Usability

Adobe Captivate does take some getting used to. There are features that are much more convoluted than they need to be, but overall it is a great product with a some excellent features. Being in a pretty small market, Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline dominate the space. They are not the same software, but allow for eLearning authoring. Each has their benefit and their downside, but, for me, Adobe Captivate edges out Storyline.

Every issue I have ever had was handled with care and quite thoroughly. After the initial conversation on the phone, I received frequent emails letting me know what they were working on, and also received follow up phone calls. After I found the resolution, I got one more call to ensure everything was working properly. The follow up was quite surprising.

Alternatives Considered

Although Articulate Storyline is more user friendly, Adobe Captivate has more functionality and options to choose from when designing an eLearning course. Articulate Storyline's interface is similar to Microsoft PowerPoint, so if you have experience with that program, Storyline should come as a Breeze. However, you are limited by all of the things you may wish to do when creating your eLearning course, which is why we chose Captivate instead.

I have used HealthStream to manage classes for another hospital, but find that NetLearning has many more options and ability to go above and beyond with educating our employees.

Return on Investment

  • We recently stopped using a vendor-supplied Security Awareness training and created our own in Captivate. Doing so saved our organization $15,000 per year.
  • We are looking to stop using other vendor-supplied training that will save us an additional $45,000 per year.
  • Adobe Captviate's subscription program is the way to go. For roughly $40 per month, we are able to use Captivate and receive all enhancements they release.

  • NetLearning has increased our nursing CEU credits with the most efficiency. Now nurses can take courses on NetLearning and have it track their hours.
  • On a compliance standpoint, NetLearning has benefited us when we are being audited and we have to show what trainings or classes an employee has made. Also, to make sure that their certifications are up to date.
