Altru

Altru shines in capturing constituent data. If you are looking for a product to collect user info and their use patterns then this database works. The challenge is getting the data out in a format usable for decision making and application. Reporting can be a bear. The preloaded key performance indicators and reports are useful but may not fit your need. Every institution is different, and every department has different needs. This product tries to bridge the gaps to create communication between areas, but at a cost. This will not serve any of the departments at 100% of what is wanted out of a database. Altru is a whole institution choice for the benefit of cross-department collaboration.

Salesforce for Nonprofits

It is great because you get all the power and functionality you can ever need and at an amazing price point. This can also be a problem as you can get overwhelmed with all the capabilities and get buried in the possibilities. You need a clear plan and clear requirements and stick to them. Once the system is up and running and your users are comfortable then you can look to improvements and changes but only once you have total buy-in.

Pros

  • The system is very intuitive and easy to learn, especially the sales functions.
  • The support resources are fantastic. From finding the answer by yourself on the knowledge base, to talking to chat support, to after hours support - I have had very good experience working with their support team.
  • Being able to have all of the departments across our organization put all of their information on one platform is an amazing improvement to what we had before Altru.
  • Since it is internet based, you can access it from anywhere - which is great when I am not in the office and need to fix something. I just jump on it on my phone!

  • Visibility, we can see at what point any of our projects are at and we can see what was done and when leveraging chatter.
  • Ease of flow, our environment was created to streamline our work flow and it does it. Once one process is completed the system moves the project to the next group/phase.
  • Ease of use. the system is intuitive and we find that the learning curve for new employees is very straight forward. The system walks you through your processes.

Cons

  • We would love to see the merchandise piece of Altru improve. Currently we use another POS system for our merchandise, because Altru does not support selling merchandise online. I would love to be able to use the same system across the board for all of our sales - tickets and merchandise.
  • I wish the reporting was more encompassing. You can use query to build your own reports, but it can be time consuming to get exactly what you want. And there seem to be a lot of reports that give you similar information, just in different ways - which can be a little confusing at first.
  • I really wish you could delete old events & price types. Even if they are attached to old orders, if there was a away to keep that history but get rid of the event &/or price type, it would clear a lot of junk out of our system.

  • We occasionally struggle with marketing cloud. It is a very robust tool and does not always seem to work well for our needs. We are working to improve it but it is proving to be a challenging tool.
  • Chatter has worked very well for our organization as it provides a history of all that has happened in the system. We attempted to consolidate all communications in one platform (chatter) but employees are not as comfortable using the solution for everyday communications as it part of our system of record. It does work for social communication but our staff is not comfortable using it.
  • Some of the integrations that we try and do are difficult and fragile at times. There has been improvement but integrations are always a concern.

We reviewed all the mid-level options before we chose Salesforce. All the other options we looked at were eater very undefined and we woud be building from scratch or they were very defined and woud require our processes to change to match the system. Salesforce was the sweet spot that had existing functionality that helped us improve but had the ability to create objects the way we work.

Return on Investment

  • It has increased our online ticket sales for programs exponentially. Before Altru our online ticket selling platform for programs was clunky & confusing for customers. Now it is easy to navigate & very customer friendly.

  • We get amazing power and functionality for a very low cost due to the foundation pricing.
  • We have experienced efficiencies in having all our work in one place. We have not assigned an ROI to this but work flow and a calmer work force has occurred.
  • The organization has grown through this time and the system has kept up and always been capable of supporting us in out increased work flow.
  • Salesforce consulting time is expensive and if not controlled it can get out of had very quickly. Again you need a plan and you need to stick to it.
