Appian

Surely Appian is not a Site Development Tool. So we should avoid the use of a system for just UX development. We should look for process automation as much as we can mature the use cases.

Oracle APEX

We needed an app system pronto and so with our switch to Oracle it worked out perfectly for us. We had been developing our database systems beforehand and so we were ready for the roll out without having to add any additional time or stress. APEX would not be well suited to any company that is not wholly committed to Oracle, though.

Pros

  • Ease of Use - one of our main drivers was that it had to be simple to use. Moreso when a large proportion of our userbase are external to the airport and sometimes unknown, which makes training a particularly difficult task. We also didn't want our internal users to be slowed down after the introduction so again we put a lot of effort into making the interface as simple to use and visually uncluttered.
  • Version upgrades, enhancements, minor bug fixes and all loaded without much interruption to the system availability time. We generally schedule version upgrades so that they occur at 1am local time to avoid any impact on our user base.
  • Appian & Cognizant resources assigned to our implementation were and still are absolutely amazing. Going above and beyond to maximise the benefits that we obtain from the implementation. Proactive when it comes to dealing with business units that are somewhat stuck in their ways, happy to demonstrate better ways of doing things and providing solutions to problems that would have been otherwise assigned to the too hard basket.

  • We were able to create a web based label application and it was quite robust.
  • Very easy to create proto-types that can be developed quickly and thrown away if not satisfying the needs
  • Developers do not require a long learning curve to pick up the fundamentals.

Cons

  • Because of the low numbers employed by our organisation, our ability to make use of an enterprise licence model has been restricted. To their credit, Appian have come up with mutually beneficial solutions to help contain costs and allow us to grow our numbers.

  • It is not a batch processing environment. Not sure this is 'room for improvement' but it is best at collecting and displaying information, getting information from spreadsheets, form entry, and more.
  • If the web is not available, you cannot access the app.
  • No connection to the server' and manually editing anything. it is all online and stored in Oracle tables.

Likelihood to Renew

The amount of time and effort that we have spent on our applications with Appian almost guarantees that we will be renewing our licenses. The ROI of Appian has been very benfical

You don't have to renew it. If you have an Oracle database (even the free XE version) you have Apex. Its so easy to use it would be daft not to.

Usability

Appian8.8

Overall I would say Appian is pretty easy to use. The learning curve for building forms and simple processes is short. However, a significant benefit of Appian is its use of business logic. In this case the user will need a deep understanding of logic statements (If, Or, And, etc). Also, to better use the data then a designer should have a good understanding of setting relationships between data points, building DB views and SQL queries. To realize the full power of Appian it does take someone with some development experience a good 6-12 months to be a well-rounded developer/designer. Also, it will help if the person doing the designing has some information architecture, interaction design experience. Knowledge on how organize data, layout forms, establish design patterns, will make the use of the forms easier.

its easy to use as a developer and applications designed using apex are easy and intuitive to use as an end user. Even non-coders can build good applications, the more code you can write the more you can enhance the application but you can get up and running quickly with almost no technical know how.

Support

Appian updates happen automatically and regularly (about every two months or so). We are informed when updates are coming to understand the timing, and in our short timeframe (about 6 months) we have had no issues with functionality breaking

Very active and knowledgeable community support includes quick and helpful responses from the Oracle employees on the product development team. I've never had to raise an official support request - everything is dealt with via forums and user groups - or via direct emails. The supposrt commuinty is one of the great things about Apex.

In-Person Training

As analyst I participated in a developer boot camp. At times it was hard to keep up but most of the time it made sense. Trainer took the time to explain and slowed pace down to answer questions etc.

Alternatives Considered

We were attracted to Appian for the following reasons:- industry leader for business process management systems- ease of use- low development platform- ability to build once and deploy to different environments- the availability of a java API enables us to interface with our online systems- simple to use and provides a common application to make adoption easier and reduce training requirements.

Obviously Oracle Application Express cannot replace WebLogic in terms of creating domains but it is not designed to do that. We can use this tool to prototype and later develop a product using the Oracle WebLogic platform. We selected Oracle Application Express due to the ease of learning, and not having to buy licenses to use it.

Return on Investment

  • Our objective to reduce customer effort when dealing with government by 25% was exceeded. In the process of applying for an alcohol licence renewal alone, we saw approximately 80% reduction in time and effort for the business customer - and that was just a prototype! Imagine the possibilities when this is taken into a live environment!

  • Well...to start with...the price is right. It's free...comes with the Oracle RDBMS.
  • No real negative impact.
  • Lots of consultants available to build more intricate apps, lots of books and tutorials available as well.
