The possibilities are endless once you start looking at individual processes. You really start to question why you have previously implemented solution specific systems when workflows and apps can do the same job without the added expense. You are really only limited by your organisation's ability to develop apps and flows. We have a high contractor population in technology so building an in-house capability is somewhat restricted.

Oracle APEX

If a company is has a need to extend an existing Oracle rep, cis, CRM or other large platform. Also if a company has Oracle-familiar resources and would like to build their own applications or modules to interact with another application.

Pros

  • Easy to implement workflow.
  • Easy to build wireframes and UIs.
  • Option to utilize various build it objects and apply those on the UIs.

  • APEX can help you create complex and powerful reports and drill downs along with the ability to Edit the data on the fly.
  • APEX can be a good replacement for Excel data entry sheets, providing centralized access to table data with authentication.
  • Data entry forms with validations and triggers can be created using your existing Oracle infrastructure, easy to implement and deploy.
  • APEX is a tool that can combine data entry forms and reporting (parent/ child ) using the Oracle tables in your database.
  • Users get the ability to make changes to the forms data in Apex and commit, get to the report page and see the changes in real time.

Cons

  • Limitation of objects capability such as 'Date / Calendar' object.
  • Limitation on the number of pages to be displayed. Here, total / max. number is 5 main pages / tabs.
  • Limitation on displaying / positioning of sub-tabs below each main page / tab. it is only possible to display the sub-tabs below the main page / main top level tab, and if the number of tabs are increased, the UI / sub-tab display becomes busy / cluttered with the title.
Kaisar Hossain (MBA PMP, 6 Sigma, Scurm/ profile photo
  • For complex APEX applications you need to be a pro expert in PL/SQL
  • Debugging in APEX can be complicated if there is a logical error. Syntax errors will end up shown as ORA errors
  • Lack of designer interface. Even though you are designing a form you need to do it by means of APEX interface using a series of steps, no UI for design
  • Oracle specific not applicable for other databases

You don't have to renew it. If you have an Oracle database (even the free XE version) you have Apex. Its so easy to use it would be daft not to.

its easy to use as a developer and applications designed using apex are easy and intuitive to use as an end user. Even non-coders can build good applications, the more code you can write the more you can enhance the application but you can get up and running quickly with almost no technical know how.

Support

We are a cloud customer and their technical support organization is very good. Their timeliness in addressing issues and questions and technical knowledge is excellent! Their customer representatives also provide a high level of support. They always check with our company on how they are doing and what they could improve on. Also, have been good at making recommendations for possible future uses of Appian within our company.

Very active and knowledgeable community support includes quick and helpful responses from the Oracle employees on the product development team. I've never had to raise an official support request - everything is dealt with via forums and user groups - or via direct emails. The supposrt commuinty is one of the great things about Apex.

As analyst I participated in a developer boot camp. At times it was hard to keep up but most of the time it made sense. Trainer took the time to explain and slowed pace down to answer questions etc.

Alternatives Considered

Limited experience with this product but did find it was harder and took longer to produce a usable product
Susan Wilkinson profile photo
I have advanced oracle skills and so for me its the obvious choice. Its free of charge and does everything I need. No need to lok at alternatives in this situation. Everything else would be costly or require third party integration. I have also used oracle apex against other databases (sqlserver) to good effect

Return on Investment

  • Improved business efficiency
Susan Wilkinson profile photo
  • Incredibly beneficial because we are getting a double benefit of the payment for the support of the licenses of the Oracle databases that we have in place. It is a free tool so we do not incur extra costs and we solve quickly.
