    This tool is well-suited for companies looking to run email marketing campaigns or send out newsletters regularly to their users/customers. The workflow setup is especially useful for companies who want to send specific emails based on user behavior - i.e. they've not logged in recently, have bought a specific product, haven't opened any emails, etc. This could also be useful for freelancers like me since you can create different workspaces within Customer.io. I have configured it this way to handle email marketing for a few of my clients, and the software keeps everything organized and separate. This might not be the best tool for small businesses, considering the price. It may be better to start out with a cheaper email marketing tool, and then if/when necessary, scale-up with a tool like Customer.io.

    Twilio SendGrid Email Marketing is perfect for organizations both big and small that may be on a lower budget. It is a very affordable solution for users with a large number of email addresses. While other providers may offer "free" storage for email contacts... the cost to send campaigns to those contacts can be very costly. While they do not offer widgets or other integrations for websites/social media... it is very easy to import and manage contacts. Additionally, they offer a comprehensive self-help support section online, but it's also easy to hop on the phone or on chat with a rep if you ever need technical support or assistance. Twilio SendGrid Email Marketing may not be the most affordable solution for users who are not currently sending email campaigns to their users, but are simply storing email contacts

    Pros

    Customer.io

    • Managing users, attributes and events. You are easily able to modify any user, based on their ID, and add or remove attributes, assign events to them. That makes it very easy to segment later and to assign them to several campaigns based on behavior. Just a warning: this integration isn't so easy (at least it wasn't for us).
    • Creating workflows of campaigns is very easy. You can quickly create behavioral campaigns based on attributes, segments and add elements to the workflow. You can send an email, then wait, then send another, then exit the campaign if they converted, etc. The workflow is easy to configure and very powerful for automation.
    • We don't use many email templates (we make them in MJML) but it's very easy to add senders, to change templates and in general to test designs.
    • Deliverability works very well, at least for us. It sends emails pretty fast and without issues.
    • Exporting is very quick and easy. Importing wasn't a feature until recently, but it works well too.
    • Seeing activity it's also useful. In general, logs are awesome (be it of a customer, of activity on the site, email sends, etc.).
    • We don't use environments, but it might be very useful for a bigger company.

    • Drag and drop email designer for transactional emails - super nice even though I do code, it's much quicker and easier to implement without code.
    • Very simple implementation. Only a few lines of code need to be added in our backend and boom we were up and running in less than a day.
    • Listening to customer feedback. They regularly send emails about new features and ask for feedback to improve their software.
    • Some of the cheapest and best dedicated IPs.
    • Easy integration and setup between marketing and transactional emails. Super helpful to have everything in one place.

    • Push notifications are very rudimentary. Everything has to be done by hand unless you're sending an extremely simple message.
    • A bit too email centric.
    • Lacks an ability to schedule messages on a daily, weekly, etc. basis.

    • Actually viewing previous emails dispatched. SendGrid does not have this feature - although it provides numbers on emails dispatched within 3 days for the cheapest plan.
    • The service asks you to pay more (although a minimal amount) to have visibility on email activity upto 30 days in the past.
    • The API doesn't allow an export of a report of email activity over a period of time. It can be quite frustrating at times to be limited in this way.
    • Their customer support isn't the best. Certainly some room for improvement there.

    It has the potential to be really cool. However, it feels as if it was created by developers for developers (and I work with developers, yet even for me the instrument was somewhat not easy to use - just read SendGrid's help manuals...) However, if you are into data and your way of thinking is more mathematical rather than lyrical, you'll enjoy this instrument

    Twilio SendGrid Email API is everything we want it to be, and we have no reason to look for any other solution. Features and pricing match exactly what we need. As developers for SaaS products, Twilio SendGrid Email API provides a great service. I hope that they stay this way and don't inflate the service with too many marketing oriented features, because there are other tools for that and Twilio SendGrid Email API is a API for sending email first and foremost.

    Customer.io was really the first pure, full-featured drip email program on the market and as far as I know, it's still the simplest and best overall for that specific function. SendGrid has also added drip campaign features, but I would seriously evaluate Customer.io against any other drip email provider because they really have all the key elements you need to make it work.

    Twilio SendGrid

    With ExpressPigeon, SendGrid stacks up very well and actually provides just as much functionality for us as ExpressPigeon, but costs surrounding that use was advantageous with ExpressPigeon. SendGrid has recently added functionality that brings it closer to Act-On, specifically on the marketing automation end. This really allows users to create long-term campaigns.
