MIP Fund Accounting

Well-suited for basic accounting, I would give it an 8. Drill-down would be nice on the general ledger to be able to look at the original entry. Maintaining the year codes and distribution codes is much too involved-this needs to be streamlined. Would be nice to be able to update information on encumbrances and purchase orders prior payment. The accounts receivable module is a bit of a nightmare-we don't use the invoicing function as it is too involved for our company. While the Accounting function deserves and 8, I would only give the payroll function about a 4.5-sorry.

SAP ERP

SAP ERP is well suited for large organizations that can fully utilize its potential. plus SAP ERP is an expensive solution, a company needs to allocate a dedicated resource to properly implement it from infrastructures, people, training and support. SAP ERP is least ideal for small enterprises, unless such enterprise belong to a holding company which runs SAP system.

Pros

MIP Fund Accounting

  • The interface and operations of Abila MIP Fund are fairly easy to utilize and learn.
  • It offers some excellent tools for managing a non-profit operation.
  • The software makes it easy to streamline operations into one system without dealing with separate departments working with different systems.

SAP ERP

  • Integration of functions within the organization (example: warehouse releasing and inventory management with finance costing and logistics)
  • Security features are on point. Clear segregation of duties can be achieved by assigning access rights based on least privilege principle
  • Can be easily learned.
  • Roles assigned to users can be customized.

Cons

MIP Fund Accounting

  • It would be nice to switch between databases without having to logout and login.
  • When entering codes (like for a journal entry) it doesn't auto-search/fill the account numbers...you have to hit the dropdown and scroll for the number.
  • You can't post cash receipts without first having an invoice, which can slow down your processing.

SAP ERP

  • SAP sometimes gets slow whenever most of the people in the company simultaneously use it
  • Hopefully they would extend background job processing to all tables in SAP since it sometimes goes time out whenever extracting large historical data (ex. 5 years expense data)

The cost of SAP as an ERP is quite high and the switching costs associated with ERP systems are even higher. That being said moving from one ERP to another only happens once in a great while for large organizations. Those switching costs include retraining, IT hardware requirements, outside consultants and more

MIP is fairly easy to learn and to update. Whether it's transaction entry or reporting it has logical steps and maintains consistency. These are things that make usability a positive and not a negative.

MIP Fund Accounting

I have used QuickBooks Premier for Non-Profits in a previous job, but not at my current position. They have used MIP for several years prior to me coming on board. QuickBooks was much easier to learn, but I don't feel it has as much functionality as MIP does with the use of multiple federal and state managements and reporting

Not real sure what you mean by scalability. It seems to be able to handle all of the funds we are currently working with. If you mean the looks of it, some things are small and it would be nice to increase the size according to the user.

Return on Investment

MIP Fund Accounting

  • Having all the modules in one convenient place has saved our company money as well as time.
  • Our finance team is much more efficient because of the combined modules, its a one-stop shop!
  • One negative impact is how long it takes someone to be trained to use the software effectively and efficiently.
