Overall Satisfaction with Actuate
Actuate is an embedded part of several of our applications. It helps us deliver information content via reports to end users and it allows the user to customize the reports with many excel like features such as sorting, aggregation, font changes, hide/show, etc.
I've used JReports and Actuate is very similar but seems to have a lot more customization features for the end user of BIRT reports.
This rating would be a 10 if the licensing structure were more accommodating.
Actuate is used in 3-4 product lines. We have about 30 developers company wide that develop reports and perhaps 100 testers and business analysts that use it. Then we resell it with our product which is used by thousands of end users.
They support plenty of major databases and we can connect to several different data sources.
As a developer, the report code itself cannot be diffed and the merged from one version of a report to another. If you have 2 developers working on the same report, the last developer's changes have to be manually implemented into the first developer's version of the report. You cannot use a tool such as WinMerge to merge differences from one report design into another. Or rather, you could but there's no guaruntee that it would work. This is a real bottleneck. You have to implement changes in the design tool.
