Overall Satisfaction with Oracle Dyn Managed DNS
As a mostly online retailer, with several brands under our umbrella, our websites are what brings the money in. Therefore, finding a reliable, fast, easily manageable, resilient DNS provider was imperative. Our IT organization uses Dyn as the primary DNS provider for all of our 100+ domains. We use their Managed DNS service.
Pros
- Dyn's API is extensive. Any and all tasks can be automated, be it updating an MX record for every single domain, or doing a quick audit to see if an IP is used somewhere. No other DNS provider has that.
- Reporting and auditing. We can run reports against queries, against users, against changes. Everything is tracked.
- User Interface. It's simple, efficient and allows me to do quick tasks, like adding a record to a zone, in just a few clicks.
- Uptime. I mean, except that one DDoS against Dyn that brought down half of the internet, I never saw them down.
Cons
- Bulk record change can only be done via API. Which could make it harder for novice users to use, having to rely on manually going from zone to zone.
- With no DNS issues and ability to quickly change records with low TTL to perform failovers, we have barely had any customer-facing downtime. Which means we are always making money.
- By using API to automate record changes during deployments, we eliminated the time it used to take to manually change and giving devs the go-ahead to deploy. That resulted in quicker code pushes, quicker deliveries of the new features users are looking for.
In the past, we have used both DNS offering from our domain registrar, Gandi, as well as DNSMadeEasy, and neither of them offered the reliability that Dyn offers. It's unbeatable. Plus Dyn also offers things like Traffic Director, which is their version of GSLB. So, we know if we ever need to use that, we just turn that service on and it will integrate seamlessly.
