Overall Satisfaction with SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager

We utilize SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager to manage Cisco device configuration changes, configuration backups, and firmware upgrades. We also used it to monitor any configuration changes detected across our network and for basic compliance reports.

Pros

  • Easy backup/archiving of running and startup configurations.
  • Distribute broad configuration changes throughout the network with config change templated.
  • Easily compare existing configuration between versions and devices.
  • Firmware upgrade templates for most Cisco devices.

Cons

  • UX can be clunky at times.
  • Firmware upgrade feature- it's useful but very cumbersome to work deploy upgrades to multiple nodes.
  • Scheduled self-sufficient backup archiving can be a great safety net when an issue comes up.
  • If your devices need to meet compliance standards this will save you in the event of an audit.
Makes bulk management of devices from well-established vendors such as Cisco very easy. If your environment is primarily lesser known devices/vendors then you might have to do extra work to get the most out of all of the features.
