Overall Satisfaction with Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance

Our Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance is used to provide backup and recovery for our virtual machines running on VMware. It is used by our IT Department to schedule backups and review the status of completed backups. We protect about 25 servers with this Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance. Bare metal backup is the primary use.
  • The user interface is intuitive and easy to use.
  • Scheduling backups is fast and easy.
  • Recovery is as simple as clicking a few buttons.
  • All-in-one solution for backups.
  • The build quality of the Unitrends provided accessory eSATA dock and interface card are inferior and not in line with the rest of the product. The dock broke after a few months use.
  • The acquisition cost per gigabyte is high, considering other options.
  • The upgrade path is costly, usually requiring complete replacement of the appliance.
  • The appliance was replaced within two years of purchase because backup capacity was exceeded.
  • We were able to successfully recover files that had been backed up.
  • Our backup cost per gigabyte was very high.
Carbonite Backup is superior and works better for our current situation. We use a NAS as local backup target, the backup agent runs on each server, and the content is deduped and copied to the cloud. Clients are easy to deploy and monitor. There is a cloud dashboard that shows updated status on backups for servers and clients.

If you have an unlimited budget, need a simple solution to backup and recover, and will never need to upgrade the capacity, Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliances are easy to install and operate.

This is not a system that will be inexpensive to acquire, so if budget is a concern, seek other options.
