Veeam Backup & Replication

Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform

Veeam Data Platform has been our replication solution for our VMware environment for several years. The integration and ease of use when dealing with VMware hypervisors made it an easy choice. As the cyber threat world evolved, we looked at several options to either enhance our backup and replication strategy, or to replace Veeam Data Platform all together. Several factors contributed to our decision making process such as ease of management, compatibility, licensing, cost, and feature set. In the end, our decision was to keep Veeam Data Platform. The product set has evolved over the years to handle the threats we see day to day.
  • Virtualized workloads
  • Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
  • In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
  • In addition to back up, we also snapshot some of these workloads
  • Cloud-hosted VMs within AWS or Azure
  • Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
  • Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
  • Ease of management platform
  • Integration with VMware
  • Integrate with immutable storage
  • Ability to customize retention periods without setting up new jobs.
  • Backup/Replication of physical database servers

Do you think Veeam Data Platform delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Veeam Data Platform's feature set?

Yes

Did Veeam Data Platform live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Veeam Data Platform go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Veeam Data Platform again?

Yes

Our server environment is roughly 95% virtual. This has remained essentially unchanged since our purchase of Veeam Data Platform several years ago.
  • When we first purchased Veeam Data Platform, it was prior to having the ability to write immutable backup files. With the threat of ransomware in todays cyber world, this ability should be a must-have on any IT security check list. The addition of immutable backups without having to learn a new platform was a bonus.
  • Due to the structure of our environment, the simple licensing model of Veeam Data Platform has proven to be the most cost effective solution we have found. We are not a fan of the subscription based model, and as of this point, we have not been forced into one with Veeam Data Platform.
Prior to Veeam Data Platform, we were mostly a traditional bare metal server and backup to tape shop. When we moved to a mostly virtualized environment, we needed a backup solution to that would play nicely with VMware. Over the years, the evolution of the Veeam products has just been a bonus. I think it would be fair to say Veeam Data Platform keeps up with industry wishes to provide a product that satisfies the changing needs of IT departments.
We do not currently use Veeam Data Platform to protect any cloud workloads, however, we do utilize the ability to store backups in the cloud. We have found that a mix of traditional data center storage and cloud storage provide the best balance of quick recovery and long term cost effectiveness. The addition of immutable storage options in the cloud was the most important feature recently added for us.
In my opinion, if the vast majority of your compute environment is VMware based, Veeam Data Platform is great solution that allows for flexible backups and replication across on premise and cloud storage. The ability to manage immutable copies is a must with todays cyber threat landscape.
