Veeam Backup & Replication

Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform

We use Veeam to backup our clustered hyper-v environment for both the township and the police department. With both instances we are setup to backup locally to the windows Veeam appliance located on-site and the appliance is set to replicate to a linux appliance setup off-site. The windows appliance is setup running hyper-v so that we can do restores for both testing backups, recovery and test updates. the linux appliance is configured with immutable backups for an extra layer of security.
  • Virtualized workloads
  • Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
  • Cloud-hosted VMs within AWS or Azure
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • Automating test restores to validate recoverability
  • Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
  • “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • Automating test restores to validate recoverability
  • Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
  • Surebackup jobs run great for testing backup integrity
  • Restore processes are very simple to pick a point in time to recover files
  • notifications work as expected and provide the reassurance to know things are working

39 virtuals and 1 phyiscal on the police side
27 virtuals and 1 physical on the township side
  • We get our backups done regularly
  • retention is automatically handled
  • off-site is automatically handled
  • Backups are routinely tested and verified to be functioning
We were using tape backups on the township side when I started. Keeping a regular rotation of tapes going outside of the building. Very frustrating and also meant no backups were done over the weekend. The PD was using Networker which was really good at restoring but managing backup jobs and testing was very difficult.
We do not use any of the cloud functionality
We backup our file server but i'm not sure if it's leveraging anything specific for it.
We don't use it for cloud backups (yet) but everything we use it for with our on-prem appliance as well as the linux off-site runs very well. Restores for both VMs and file system restores are very simple to use. Configuring the backups and the sure backups jobs to run on set scheduled is as easy as you could want or expect.
