Veeam Backup & Replication

Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform

We use Veeam Data Platform to backup a number of on-premise devices, including VMWare VM's and physical hosts. We leverage storage we provide both on premise and in the cloud to ensure all mission critical data is backed up reliably and recoverable quickly. In today's IT world, ransomware is a when, not an if anymore, so having current backups you can trust is crucial.
  • Virtualized workloads
  • Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
  • In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
  • Cloud-hosted VMs within AWS or Azure
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • Capacity Tier to store data within object storage for longer term retention
  • Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
  • “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
  • Capacity Tier to store data within object storage for longer term retention
  • Replication to multiple cloud storage providers
  • Easy to setup new backups
  • Instant recovery to VMWare is super fast
  • You still have to provide your own storage for on prem and cloud backups
  • No ability to have automated spin up and verification of backups
  • Not enough backup frequency options

Do you think Veeam Data Platform delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Veeam Data Platform's feature set?

No

Did Veeam Data Platform live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of Veeam Data Platform go as expected?

I wasn't involved with the implementation phase

Would you buy Veeam Data Platform again?

Yes

We're backing up roughly 60 virtual machines and another half dozen physical platforms. We do not use Veeam Data Platform to backup our Azure servers or O365 data, instead relying on other providers for that. It's exactly what we anticipated when we acquired the platform, with typical growth over the years.
  • In terms of ROI, that's difficult to quantify until you have an event that needs restoring
  • It has been helpful in the past to instant recover a VM to a test environment to validate if a previous configuration was working
  • Negative impact would be the need to provide and manage the storage resources for Veeam Data Platform
I was not involved with the selection and implementation of the Veeam Data Platform at my current company. I have previous experience with other solutions like Datto, which offer some features that Veeam Data Platform doesn't, but that comes with an increased monthly cost that you don't have with Veeam Data Platform.
The ability of Veeam Data Platform to add a capacity tier that's compatible with multiple cloud destinations was very helpful, and easy to use. You can select any S3 compatible provider, such as BackBlaze to add a very inexpensive, but still very secure way to replicate your backups to the cloud on a regular basis.
We do not leverage this capability.
It's well suited for companies that have primarily on premise workloads that either already have extra storage to use, or don't mind providing and managing their own backup storage. It's also lower cost since they're not providing storage or management of the backups.

For companies that want more automated testing of backups, things like spinning up backups of servers daily to verify functionality, it's not great, and I'd look at competitors first. In addition, if you want a fully managed backup solution that includes storage and management, this isn't really the product for you.
