1&1

I run five websites off of 1&1 for different outshoots of the company. For our web needs it works perfectly. We have a midgrade hosting package and it works perfectly. I know if issues arose from traffic or storage space 1&1 would have a solution for us.

GoDaddy

GoDaddy is well suited for registering and managing domain names, email service.I wouldn't recommend using GoDaddy's hosting, from personal experience: GoDaddy's used custom control panel is really a pain to deal with; the service was slow and the customer service is not impressive at all.

Pros

  • Their uptime is outstanding.
  • They have great customer support with real people.
  • They have all the technologies available I need to run my website.
  • Their dashboard is easy to use.
  • Proactive customer service. GoDaddy will reach out to you if they think you might be having an issue based on your usage patterns.
  • Documentation. There is fairly robust documentation on how to do certain things with your hosting.
  • Up time. I've never had my site go down.

Cons

  • I wish they'd let you use other SSL providers.
  • Navigation UI. It can be hard to know where you are and what you are working within.
  • Onboarding tutorials. With a variety of different skill levels using the tool, it might be helpful to offer some sort of getting started tutorial so users can make informed choices.

Some integration could be much cleaner and smoother. Seems it used to be easier. Plus, they took away the catch all email feature.

Alternatives Considered

Rackspace I find to be too pricey for the service they offer. Pagely is very much WordPress oriented. I've had downtime with both that I haven't experienced with 1&1.
GoDaddy is simple to get set up with for someone who isn't an IT professional. Their documentation and customer support are excellent when troubleshooting.

Return on Investment

  • There is no downtime so we appear dependable to our customers.
  • The cost of 1&1 is very reasonable.
  • GoDaddy allows us to focus on the client's site, instead of hosting and domains. This has been a plus for our business.
  • The negative impact, if any, is that clients sometimes feel like they can just handle things themselves because we make it look so easy to work with GoDaddy.
  • Nearly 100% of our website clients are hosted on GoDaddy.
