3dcart

3dcart works well for small to medium size businesses that want to take care of their own website and product uploads and have the time to stay on top of inventory management. It does not work as well for a business who wants to just "turn it on" and forget about it unless they are able to integrate their POS system with 3dcart to manage inventory.

OpenCart

OpenCart is great for web developers familiar with PHP who have clients who want very specific eCommerce functionalities. OpenCart is "open-source," meaning its source code is open to the public and downloadable and editable by anyone. This makes customizing its functionalities possible with nearly an infinite variety of possibilities. If you are not tech savvy and don't like to read documentation and configure advanced settings, then OpenCart is not the best solution for you.

Pros

3dcart

  • SEO - 3dcart is built in such a way that even if you do no SEO work at all, as long as you use the meta description wizard on each page or product you wind up still searching pretty well in Google.
  • Product uploads - Product uploads are easy to do with 3dcart's .csv import/export feature. No need to struggle with messy simple and variable uploads like on WooCommerce, 3dcart takes the guesswork and hassle out of uploading different product types.
  • Media uploads - Media uploads are quick and simple and the uploader always works.

OpenCart

  • OpenCart is well suited in cases where our eCommerce web development clients want a very specific design with very specific shopping cart functionalities.
  • OpenCart is very flexible in its native ability to work with a wide variety of payment processors and payment gateways.
  • OpenCart makes it both fast and easy to setup and configure a new shopping cart website, especially if you use one of the pre-made templates.

Cons

3dcart

  • 3dcart does not connect to many of the POS systems my clients use so we need to manually update inventory daily/weekly.
  • There are many modules available to do many different things, but it makes you feel like you are being tickled and died to death to get the site to do exactly what you want. Also can be confusing if you don't know what you actually need.
  • It's a little difficult/confusing to upload products with multiple variations - ie: color and size - especially if there are multiples colors and multiple sizes.

OpenCart

  • SQL queries are very heavy.
  • Limited customer support
  • Add-ons often necessary, which you need to purchase, and they are costly.

Not applicable - as a franchisee, the franchiser took over the web site and shopping cart capabilities, so I no longer need the tool. But I would recommend it.

Alternatives Considered

3dcart

I found 3dcart to be the most cost effective and easiest to use for my smaller to medium sized business clients.

OpenCart

OpenCart is much more flexible then Magento in customization and does not have as many technical errors. Although some Magento users insist that one can easily create a beautiful customized eCommerce website, OpenCart is more flexible with a better user base, better documentation, and a cleaner, more robust, core. Magento installations and upgrades often have technical glitches that are somewhat annoying, and these do not occur as often when we use OpenCart for our client's eCommerce websites.

Return on Investment

3dcart

  • 3dcart has enabled my clients to quickly and easily get up and running with an online store giving them an almost immediate ROI.

OpenCart

  • OpenCart has had a strong positive impact in creating professional highly-customized eCommerce websites for our web design clients.
  • OpenCart has improved our development time and somewhat automated our eCommerce setup and implementation.
  • OpenCart allows us to edit and customize its source code and create custom modules and configurations to resell to the public at large.
