Acronis Backup

I actually think that it works great for most scenarios.

McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator

MCAfee is really great end protection to any sort of organization but there is only one scenario I really feel it is inappropriate. Whenever a scan is performed, the system CPU utilization goes up 100 percent. This is one of the priority cases where McAfee needs to optimize system performance and also add customized threat feeds. If these two things are fixed, then I would definitely give a 10 to McAfee.

Pros

Acronis Backup

  • This software is really easy to implement. You are up and running within a day.
  • Restores are extremely easy to implement.
  • When you do need to contact support they are really helpful.

McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator

  • Static malware scans for known bad processes and files works well and can be schedules on endpoints easily
  • Preventing users from accessing USB drives and other peripherals is easily configured. We can also allow users to access to USB drives with user codes for the times they need it for business reasons.
  • ePO provides access into our MSME software so that we're not managing many different products from different locations.
  • In recent years the console has gotten much easier to navigate even though there is a ton of information to be accessed.

Cons

Acronis Backup

  • You can find local resources but you cannot search the network globally. You have to input an IP/DNS name to search. Whereas in the previous version 11.7, you could search and find locations without having to use these references.
  • The interface is somewhat slow to load
  • The licensing is very difficult to navigate if you are using Acronis in different locations because you have to have a controller on different subnets and you can't sync the licensing across the network
  • Also, keeping track of what the computer is using what license if you have not added to the management controller is difficult.
  • My biggest issue with Acronis Backup Advanced 12.5 is if the hard drive on your machine starts to fail you cannot run the software to back up the machine. I spent a lot of time with support with just this issue and they could do nothing until I replaced the hard drive but at that point, I could not run a backup so I had to use the oldest backup I had.

McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator

  • Setup was more time consuming than expected.
  • Consolidated with McAfee products better than other vendor products.
  • Support for lesser-known vendors was not available.

Likelihood to Renew

Acronis Backup

Acronis Backup 9.1
Based on 2 answers
We have renewed our subscription over the course of a few years now. We used to use Backup Exec and it was tedious and difficult to obtain our backups when needed. Acronis just fits our environment style and the way we prefer to do business and use our third party software.

Usability

Acronis Backup

Acronis Backup 8.2

I give it a rating of 9 do to its ease of usability. It's ease of understanding how to setup - form - fit - and function. I have no sorrows when having to login to the console in order to setup a new backup schedule or retrieve and recover lost data.

Support

Acronis Backup

Acronis Backup 8.2
Based on 1 answer
We have only had to contact support a hand full of times. The reason for this 9 out of 10 is do to how quickly and cooperative they have been on the rare occasion we needed to chat with them about our small questions or queries with potential issues do to the nature of our business.

Implementation

Acronis Backup

Acronis Backup 9.1
Based on 1 answer
I don't have any real key 'insights' per say except that it wasn't difficult at all, and do not be afraid to dabble in its tools and settings. It is quite intuitive with built in common sense. I cannot say enough good things about our companies experience when using this backup software.

Alternatives Considered

Acronis Backup

Acronis is the best software only solution. Veeam has many flavors and does a superb (and more scalable) job of backing up data and replicating it offsite. Backup Exec is the oldest big player and has not done a lot to keep up with the competitors. Carbonite is a cloud-backup solution that does a good job but primarily pipes data offsite versus retain in-house.

McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator

Other products that were reviewed were Symantec's DLP and Forcepoint. The reason we ultimately went the ePolicy Orchestrator route was that we owned other McAfee products and the logic way to bring them together and to gain the maximum information was to bin them together with orchestrator, We also own AlienVault and we had to achieve various workarounds to get the information that was required from this and fed into orchestrator. Therefore is you are predominantly a McAfee shop this product will be the logical selection.

Scalability

Acronis Backup

Acronis Backup 7.7

For the majority of smaller companies, this solution is the best fit. If a company begins to have numerous servers and a large amount of data, this solution may no longer be the best fit.

Return on Investment

Acronis Backup

  • We have found that this was a much more cost-effective solution than our Symantec platform. The fact we could purchase a single VM 'host' license meant that we could back up every VM on that host - irrespective of how many VMs there were.
  • The backup management can now be administered centrally - this allows easy remote access from technicians from anywhere within our business.
  • Separate and distinct users can also be configured to add a much needed security layer to the backup management process. This was lacking in the previous Symantec model we had.

McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator

  • Licensing is always negotiable
  • Brings together all McAfee products and ROI
  • Time needs to be spent to make sure the product is defined and set up to perform maximum efficiency otherwise any ROI gains can be lost.
