If you do not have a large budget and are a large organization, I would steer clear of Actuate. If you are looking to do very complex washboarding, I would not use them. Your developers have to be very skilled to work with this. Plan to bring in consultants if necessary to help your process. Adhoc reporting is weak. If your pricing is user based and you expand, this could be very expensive.

Power BI For Office 365

Well-suited: In small-to-medium size businesses (SMB), Power BI is a wonderful solution. The speed to design and deploy a highly valuable solution makes it a fantastic selection for these businesses. Also, individual or small teams, even in large corporations, can benefit from it. Finally, accounting, finance, and business analysts are the "sweet-spot audience" for Power BI. Also, Power BI is great for designing prototypes or mockups of future enterprise capabilities.Less Appropriate: Information Technology team developing an enterprise analytics solution. Power BI is not intended to be an enterprise solution. Power BI is fully capable of handling millions of rows of data for analysis. However, in more complex analytical scenarios, where complex rules are incorporated into the data model over VERY LARGE sets of data (in particular, dimensional/structural data), the PowerPivot solution is not as strong. It is generally recommended that you upgrade to SQL Server Analysis Services for these scenarios.

Pros

  • In terms of extensibility this is the best reporting platform we have seen. You can build very sophisticated reports with different data sources, and extend the basic functionality with javscript code
  • Securing the BI system is also a strength and the system can be configured relatively easily.
  • Reports can be available on mobile devices
  • Good Javascript embedding framework does not require the site to be built in java

  • perfectly integrated with microsoft tools
  • objects can be easily shared in mobile environments
  • attractive dashboards

Cons

  • The report designer can be unstable at times.
  • The reporting engine tends to have memory leaks with certain types of massive-data reporting.
  • The report graphics don't have the sexiest appeal (e.g. Glossy feel, animated output)
  • Some extensibility is extremely difficult to get to without purchasing a license (e.g. Setting a simple flag so that HTML outputs in compressed mode requires either creating your own emitter or going the paid route)

  • in the standard version it is not possible to do analysis by excel
  • the Pro version is required for sharing jobs
  • only a few data sources allow real time connections

If I were a small business owner, I would likely use Power BI for Office 365 for the sheer fact that I would get the Office licensing I need, along with powerful capabilities. As a Microsoft Partner, we continue to see Microsoft invest heavily in the Power BI capabilities, and will continue to implement and support BI solutions around this product, as we believe this is in the best interest of our clients.

Breadth of Deployment

Actuate is used in 3-4 product lines. We have about 30 developers company wide that develop reports and perhaps 100 testers and business analysts that use it. Then we resell it with our product which is used by thousands of end users.

At the maximum, we have had 10 users, of which 3 were data analysts. The others were consumers of the data.

Alternatives Considered

We looked at a few other competitor's products but based on value for features chose Actuate for its total cost of ownership.

Pricing and functionality. Tableau Desktop is a very capable self-service business intelligence and analytics solution. The very rich visualization capabilities are far superior to that of Excel and Power BI. However, the pricing for the Power BI desktop is extraordinary. If you own Excel 2010 or 2013, you can download the functionality for free. And more often than not, the visualization capabilities of Excel are quite good enough. Another reason we selected Power BI is the shallow learning curve for users, compared to Tableau and other similar solutions. Excel is very familiar to most data analysts and finance/accounting teams. It is a comfortable environment on which to add powerful analytic capabilities.

Collaboration and Sharing

As a developer, the report code itself cannot be diffed and the merged from one version of a report to another. If you have 2 developers working on the same report, the last developer's changes have to be manually implemented into the first developer's version of the report. You cannot use a tool such as WinMerge to merge differences from one report design into another. Or rather, you could but there's no guaruntee that it would work. This is a real bottleneck. You have to implement changes in the design tool

As long as each user has a Power BI licence, it is a 10 out of 10. However, it is harder to share with people who don't have a licence.

I need R data, Excel and SQL server, which it has. It would be good if I could import a web table though.

Return on Investment

  • Actuate can handle 50 to 60 sub reports inside a report very well.
  • Dynamically creating the datasource, chart, graph, reports are the main advantages. We can do any level of drilling, and can create a performance matrix dashboard efficiently.

  • It's allowed us to better visualize large amounts of data.
  • It's an easy way to tie into an existing SQL database for users that don't know SQL.
