If you do not have a large budget and are a large organization, I would steer clear of Actuate. If you are looking to do very complex washboarding, I would not use them. Your developers have to be very skilled to work with this. Plan to bring in consultants if necessary to help your process. Adhoc reporting is weak. If your pricing is user based and you expand, this could be very expensive.

Yellowfin

Yellowfin works very well layered over an existing data warehouse and used to visualise data. We already had an extensive data warehouse solution which has grown over many years. It provides a cutting edge user interface to enable very easy access and use of the data. The view based metadata layer in particular is a big strength. Yellowfin only has CSV data imports so do not expect it to solve any traditional ETL issues.

Cons

  • The report designer can be unstable at times.
  • The reporting engine tends to have memory leaks with certain types of massive-data reporting.
  • The report graphics don't have the sexiest appeal (e.g. Glossy feel, animated output)
  • Some extensibility is extremely difficult to get to without purchasing a license (e.g. Setting a simple flag so that HTML outputs in compressed mode requires either creating your own emitter or going the paid route)

  • Initially the Yellowfin business model was difficult to align to the VSV model but through some simple negotiations a workable model was reach which made in commercial application viable
  • Some additional licensing models could also be of value as we do not use the product in a pure business intelligence only application.

Breadth of Deployment

Actuate is used in 3-4 product lines. We have about 30 developers company wide that develop reports and perhaps 100 testers and business analysts that use it. Then we resell it with our product which is used by thousands of end users.

Alternatives Considered

I've used JReports and Actuate is very similar but seems to have a lot more customization features for the end user of BIRT reports.

My selection of Yellowfin based on following criteria for the Indian market:
  • Availability in Linux platform to process high volume of transaction with CAL (concurrent user access license) model to use multiple server with high concurrent users
  • Dynamic storyboarding, collaborative and timeline approach for senior management
  • Fast development and deployment with web-based centralised architecture
  • Value/$- Yellowfin has been #1 on BARCs value/$ rating for the past 3 years. Plus it has a very simple user-based licensing model

Collaboration and Sharing

OpenText Analytics6.1

As a developer, the report code itself cannot be diffed and the merged from one version of a report to another. If you have 2 developers working on the same report, the last developer's changes have to be manually implemented into the first developer's version of the report. You cannot use a tool such as WinMerge to merge differences from one report design into another. Or rather, you could but there's no guaruntee that it would work. This is a real bottleneck. You have to implement changes in the design tool

Yellowfin makes it easy to share and distribute reports and information through the various dissemination options available. On of the key features of the product is the scripting interface where charts and graphs can now dynamically form part of non Yellowfin interfaces but still be driven by the Yellowfin engine.

Return on Investment

  • Actuate can handle 50 to 60 sub reports inside a report very well.
  • Dynamically creating the datasource, chart, graph, reports are the main advantages. We can do any level of drilling, and can create a performance matrix dashboard efficiently.
