Alteryx Analytics

Well suited: if an organization already has a lot of running ETLs or pipelines but need to systemize them, Alteryx is a good choice. It would be good to figure out how well Alteryx would be harmonized with the existing components, but in a general sense, it may be well harmonized. Less appropriate: Alteryx is good for "automation", but some data developers and analysts may prefer to remain and keep using SQL tools. One should be careful of not just adding "one more layer or tool" into the existing pipeline and make it more complicated to manage.

PowerCenter

PowerCenter is well equipped to handle large amounts of data movement in an organization with many disparate sources and a structured development team. It excels in enforcing enterprise development standards through things like metadata manager and the monitoring capabilities (as well as being able to design monitoring rules for everything from naming standards to design practices). It is especially well suited at handling flat-file data in addition to its many connectors and native support for just about any ANSI standard database. For large development teams or the desire to remain flexible at an enterprise scale, Powercenter is a top-tier solution. For small projects or even smaller development teams with mostly a single data source, expect frustration with being able to quickly test a solution as the design flow is very structured. It is also designed in a way that segregation of duties at a very high level can also cause small development teams to be counter-productive. Each step in the design process is a separate application, and although stitched together, is not without its problems. In order to design a simple mapping for example, you would first need a connection established to the source (example, ODBC) and keep in mind that it will automatically name the container according to how you named your connection. You would then open the designer tool, import a connection as a source, optionally check it in, create a target, optionally check it in as well, and design a transformation mapping. In order to test or run it, you will need to open a separate application (Workflow Manager) and create a workflow from your mapping, then create a session for that workflow and a workflow for those one or more sessions at which point you can test it. After running it, in order to observe, you then need to open a separate application (Monitor) to see what it is doing and how well. For a developer coming from something like SSIS, this can be daunting and cumbersome for building a simple POC and trying to test it (although from the inverse, building an enterprise scalable ETL solution from SSIS is its own challenge).

Pros

  • Alteryx provides an integrated workflow management environment for data blending, analytics, and reporting. It is also very extensible to be connected to a variety of data connections including major databases (Oracle, etc.), analytics tools (R), and visualization tools such as Tableau through its plugins. Our department used Oracle and Tableau already and it was well integrated with Alteryx.
  • The workflow authoring environment in Desktop is easy to use so that most of the users (if they are a bit skilled data developers or analysts) may not need the training to use its basic functions. Drag and drop interface and icons are intuitive to understand.
  • When running Alteryx workflows, it is easy to monitor and track what's the progress by seeing percentages. It is helpful to balance and manage bandwidths of database servers, especially when to populate large data sets.

  • Data migration from multiple sources. It handles any type of source data including RDBMS, flat files, XML, mainframe etc.
  • Implementing data migration rules is very easy and efficient and reusable.
  • Development and maintenance of code is very easy. Design, development and scheduling of full load and incremental load is very easy.
  • Provides lot of features for developers to implement any kind of business rules.

Cons

  • Excel reporting - reports in PDF are fairly straightforward, but trying to output results in Excel can prove to be tricky/ugly.
  • Chart creation - current chart tool is very basic; needs to be a way to customize the look/feel of a chart more, as well as an easier way to incorporate "big" data that can be easily reported on/viewed.

  • Not worth doing simple data migration using powercenter.
  • Licensing cost.
  • Handling Blobs and clobs data types.

I personally have moved to a different position that does not require data analysis tools. I really enjoyed working with Alteryx and think it is a great tool, but have moved to a different organization and role.

Through a graphical UI one can perform engineering and development, other vendors do not have such a code-less interface.

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

Implementation

Alteryx Analytics10.0
Based on 1 answer
There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

Alternatives Considered

Haven't used any other products that come close to comparing to Alteryx...

SSIS is a good entry into ETL, for smaller organizations or Microsoft-centric companies. It's strengths lie in its ease-of-use, quick turnaround, and simplicity. Its weaknesses lie in scalability and re-usability (you can achieve re-usability, however segmentation is at the project level with no global scale). Pentaho is a great, low cost solution with deceptive power, however scheduling along with flexibility in other functions such as OS level script execution is a bit weaker. PowerCenter and DataStage are more comparable at an enterprise ETL level, having different management philosophies and approaches. For both, there are features in each that I wish the other either adopted or replaced, however due to its place in the market, ease of finding additional developers, and scalability, PowerCenter was chosen.

I haven't had a chance to use Alteryx for collaborating, as I was only working on it. But I had to share a lot of reports, and analytics.

Data Integration

Alteryx Analytics8.9

Unless there's totally different kinds of datasets, it works with any flat file sheets and is very easy to play with data. If you have files in shared folders the run time depends on the size and speed of accessibility as well, but for most part it works really smooth.

Return on Investment

  • It gets the job done fast.
  • It lends itself well for people with a less-technical aptitude to understand the data process.
  • It empower the user to come up with any possible solution to a problem.

  • PowerCenter enabled turnaround on critical projects to be increased.
  • PowerCenter enabled the delivery of time critical processes.
  • PowerCenter allows increased employee efficiency with less experience.
