Alteryx Analytics

It is very well suited for mid-sized data operations. One person working on a project is ideal. I have not used Alteryx in a collaborative project, so can't say for sure. It is quite powerful and compares well with the competitors. If you have data from disparate sources, it helps to have a tool like Alteryx.

It's a great tool to merge actual data analysis (which Lumira doesn't do that well) with visualization (which Lumira does well) - so it can be seen as Lumira for data analysts. However, a lot of the 'predictive' side is hidden/black box which can be frustrating for those analysts, so you could argue it is too complex for casual users, but too 'black box' for analysts.

Pros

  • Data ingestion: Alteryx is capable of connecting with a multitude of data sources from SQL databases to cloud-hosted solutions like Salesforce, Tableau, or Google Analytics. Also supports OleDB & ODBC connections.
  • Dynamic data munging: Alteryx has a great variety of processing tools to clean and prep data including: dedupe, formulas, joins, union, sort... Performing these functions really quickly on even moderately equipped laptops or desktops. It's dynamic in that it can easily handle changes in data by allowing extra columns to flow through.
  • Macros: have a process that you are consistently running in separate workflows? Build a macro, be it a batch or iterative, Alteryx can do it. I've built 40-50 macros and use at least 4+ in every workflow I design so data is handled the same way in every workflow for consistency and cutting down on copy/pastes.

  • Ability to use built-in algorithms or expand using R. This means that (with training) casual users can take advantage but also data analysts can do their thing!
  • Integration and consistency with Lumira. Even Lumira on its own has a quick 'predict' functionality (although limited/black box)
  • Ability to do the analysis and then present visually using the Lumira visualization capabilities

Cons

  • Speed is somewhat lacking.
  • It isn't optimally geared for ETL.
  • Intellisense would be a nice feature
  • There is no version control.
  • The tools could use some more features.
  • More pre-built macros would be nice

  • It's extremely hard to get started. We even have a data scientist who, when we put Predictive Analytics in front of them, they could not intuitively create a data model and start analyzing. Even with deep knowledge of data analysis, the interface isn't intuitive and it's hard to get to the point of having imported a data set and start analyzing/predicting
  • Our platform team had confusion installing Predictive Analytics, particularly on the BI Platform. Additional complexity came when it came to using APL Libraries (AFL Wrapper or Stored Procedures)
  • We are still working on merging datasets. In theory, we get how to do it but we come across all sorts of issues which don't occur in Spotfire (missing records etc.)

Through a graphical UI one can perform engineering and development, other vendors do not have such a code-less interface.

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

Implementation

Alteryx Analytics10.0
Based on 1 answer
There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

Alternatives Considered

I have used Tableau Desktop. We selected Alteryx because of the better pricing options they had for our firm. Although Tableau has amazing features like data blending, story designing dashboards, parameters switches, geo coding, etc. Alteryx provides decent solutions in most of these areas as well.Tableau Servers and licenses are very expensive on a per-user basis, and here Alteryx wins hands down.

We have typically used Spotfire for data analysis but decided to move to SAP Business Objects due to its innate connection with SAP. I found Lumira to be good for visualizations but it is not meant for data analysis. Therefore, we have introduced Predictive Analytics to see if it can fill that gap. So far, it's been far less intuitive than Spotfire to get started, and as far as I am aware so far, it does not bring many additional capabilities. I do, however, like that it utilizes the Lumira look/feel and integrates very well.

Collaboration and Sharing

Doesn't really allow for much collaboration in real time other than sharing flat files with coworkers. Have to utilize a 3rd party cloud hosting platform in order to try to collaborate on a workflow.

Data Integration

Alteryx Analytics8.8
Based on 17 answers
That is the best feature according to me. I could use data from a wide range of sources and it was pretty easy to merge all of them which isn't really an easy thing to do. It makes our life a lot easier when the blending capabilities are so easy to manage. Don't have to worry about having only a specific type of data source.

Return on Investment

  • Faster data processes (appending various data)
  • Non-gis people have been able to to geocode/build trade areas (this is positive and negative)
  • Quickly generate a standardized way of research processes
No photo available
  • It will potentially save time in forecast creation by giving an algorithm-derived forecast which can then be adjusted vs. starting from scratch. We can call this, a system enabled forecast
  • Thresholds can be created based on historical data to flag actuals as in/out of the 'norm', or to limit the scope of an investigation
  • We spent a lot of time so far and haven't got very far with it - it's been quite frustrating to use and a lot of time/money has been invested
