Alteryx Analytics

Well suited: if an organization already has a lot of running ETLs or pipelines but need to systemize them, Alteryx is a good choice. It would be good to figure out how well Alteryx would be harmonized with the existing components, but in a general sense, it may be well harmonized. Less appropriate: Alteryx is good for "automation", but some data developers and analysts may prefer to remain and keep using SQL tools. One should be careful of not just adding "one more layer or tool" into the existing pipeline and make it more complicated to manage.

TIBCO Statistica

If you have an analytics department, Statistica is perfect for making analyses quicker. Statistica works well for web querying, automating analyses, sharing advanced analyses with others, and performing lots of other advanced analytical processes. Statistica is not a good fit if the analytics you do is stuff that Excel can do. The software is powerful, with lots of features, and unless you actually plan on using those features, it's not worth paying for.

Pros

  • Cleaning datasets
  • Preparing data for analyzing
  • Customer data analytics
  • Transforming data from one format to other

  • Statistica does an awesome job with web scraping. It's the easiest tool out there to scrape web data.
  • The point-and-click process for performing neural networks is awesome.
  • The graphics produced by Statistica are as good or better than most other software tools.

Cons

  • Poor documentation
  • Costly
  • Overkill for simple tasks
  • Not many options for data visualization
Sanket Bharaswadkar profile photo
  • Although the graphics can be copied into Word or Excel, the copying and pasting process is buggy. Sometimes I basically have to do a Capture Rectangle of a graphic and paste it as a jpg, rather than having an embedded and editable graphic in my Word document.
  • The dialog boxes for some of the common tests, like multiple regression and ANOVA, use quirky terminology that is not intuitive to new users coming out of grad school with a more updated education. I have been using it for over ten years, and the dialogs have not updated in all of that time.
  • The tests like NMDS and PCA are clunky and difficult to use and get the appropriate outputs, especially compared to specialized software like PRIMER.

I personally have moved to a different position that does not require data analysis tools. I really enjoyed working with Alteryx and think it is a great tool, but have moved to a different organization and role.

The company is hesitant to spend this much on software. They are primarily an engineering firm, and they don't understand the use of analytical software for environmental professionals.

Through a graphical UI one can perform engineering and development, other vendors do not have such a code-less interface.

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

Implementation

There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

Alternatives Considered

Alteryx was surely a better option compared to RapidMiner but when compared against IBM SPSS it is behind for advanced analytical techniques and model scoring, visualization capabilities and neural networks functionalities. SPSS also has a diverse range of analytical techniques and models compared to Alteryx. RapidMiner provides a Studio component for design, a Server component, a Hadoop connector called Radoop and a component for stream processing.

Statistica seems to be built around the idea that analysts would prefer not to code when they don't have to. As such, TIBCO Statistica does a great job making available to average analysts techniques that are about as modern as they get. The way Statistica advances the analytical capability of analytics staff is second to none. On the downside, the software isn't cheap, and unless you have ongoing projects that require continued advanced analytics, it's not worth the effort. Additionally, it's not the fastest running tool, probably because of how much is stuffed into the point-and-click interface.

Return on Investment

  • Definitely, an increase in employee efficiency. With the right tools and hardware, Alteryx can reduce the processing time significantly.
  • Automation and/or automatic report scheduling frees up a lot of time that can be used elsewhere.
  • Licensing updates are somewhat not handled easily and quite often create issues with modules to run slowly and/or not being active.

  • For exploring large datasets with minimal set-up time, it works very well. There is no programming needed, and the graphics can be made to look professional with some editing. This helps stay within budget for data analysis.
  • If both senior and junior staff have access to the software, then senior staff can explore and decide on the final analysis and junior staff can make the manual tweaks needed for the final product.
