Alteryx Analytics

Well suited: if an organization already has a lot of running ETLs or pipelines but need to systemize them, Alteryx is a good choice. It would be good to figure out how well Alteryx would be harmonized with the existing components, but in a general sense, it may be well harmonized. Less appropriate: Alteryx is good for "automation", but some data developers and analysts may prefer to remain and keep using SQL tools. One should be careful of not just adding "one more layer or tool" into the existing pipeline and make it more complicated to manage.

TIBCO Statistica

Well suited for regression & related analyses, but lacking on general analytical & simulation functionality. Need to utilize multiple tools.

Pros

  • It can independently generate required analytics instead of having to require specialists.
  • The ability to read and write in a multitude of formats: from Excel, Access tables, Tableau and Teradata to MapInfo, ESRI, Google Earth, etc.
  • Single drag and drop workflow instead of multiple tools.

  • The interface is screen based and much easier for teams of non-experts to use. Can, however, directly utilize in scripts and/or programming languages, so best of both worlds.
  • Has an extensive range of statistical methods, as well as extensive statistics around those methods.
  • The interface consistent across all modules.

Cons

  • The visualization that Alteryx provides can be improved much more than where it stands tonight.
  • It doesn't seem to be able to process Big Data as efficiently as I would have liked.
  • There are a lot of things that you need to learn.

  • Unfortunately, some functionality is hidden per upgrade to other versions. Feel data mining functionality would be useful, but not budget for software. At the current price point, would have expected more (such as Mathematica breadth of functionality for one price).
  • It is light on optimization capability.
  • Slow when considering very large datasets, performing things such as distribution identification

I personally have moved to a different position that does not require data analysis tools. I really enjoyed working with Alteryx and think it is a great tool, but have moved to a different organization and role.

The company is hesitant to spend this much on software. They are primarily an engineering firm, and they don't understand the use of analytical software for environmental professionals.

Through a graphical UI one can perform engineering and development, other vendors do not have such a code-less interface.

Reliability and Availability

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

Implementation

Based on 1 answer
There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

Breadth of Deployment

Our company kept it contained in the marketing department. Other departments may not understand it.

Alternatives Considered

For analytics Alteryx outperforms others.

Used Mathematica (not in the list), which has greater overall functionality (outside of statistics), but Statistica is much easier to use, especially for analysts with limited experience.

Data Integration

Alteryx Analytics8.9

Range of sources is the definitely the reason it deserves a 9 out of 10. From someone lacking a technical background, I enjoy using Alteryx in some of my project management responsibilities, and being able to load all the deliverables I am tracking is a huge differentiator from an Excel spreadsheet.

Return on Investment

  • It gets the job done fast.
  • It lends itself well for people with a less-technical aptitude to understand the data process.
  • It empower the user to come up with any possible solution to a problem.
Nick Lensing profile photo
  • Our company has had the program for less than 1 year. We don't expected a positive return this year. The goal is for Statistica to led to defined projects by the end of the end of the year and implementation in the following two. Overall, we are planning on 4 years to fully recoup the cost of the software and the cost of implementing identified projects.
